Siberian: With Me Review

Siberian: With Me ReviewI got an e-mail from Finn Parnell who is part of Siberian a band from Seattle, Washington. He asked me to check out his band’s album “With Me” which is available for free to stream. My first impression on “With Me” was very strong that I believed I should really get my hands on a digital copy.
“With Me” is phenomenal. I general listen to new material every day and this album from Siberian which was released on October 23rd could have floored me with how good it was. Finn shouldn’t need to e-mail people about his band’s album! I was trying to figure out who they sound like and my conclusion is that they seem to be a mix of Interpol (musically) and a bit like Okkervil River (vocally). The problem for Siberian is probably due to be a small band at the moment. They are part of Sonic Boom Records which has housed bands such as Nada Surf and Death Cab For Cutie in association with a larger independent label called Barsuk Records.

The album is great,I enjoy every track and I had a tough choice choosing which tracks I would want people to listen to that would have others becoming fans. My personal favorite is Paper Birds but there are many tracks I would say are close seconds. From excellent vocals to seemingly simple intros, they have a knack for capturing my brain and making me addicted to this album. Due to this band deserving some much needed hype for a great album that is “With Me” I’m giving it a 5 out of 5. For a band who doesn’t have a lot of hype surrounding them this album has made me a fan and I look forward to hearing more from them. Visit their myspace! Look for this album to make my top 10 list.

I wish my blog had a bigger influence/audience as my blog is really young. These guys deserve the hype so spread the word.

Check out these tracks and the e-mail questions I shot at Finn.

Due to Finn e-mailing personally, I figured I get the chance (possibly not many chances in the future) to ask a few questions since there isn’t much information on this band yet.

Allan: What are your band’s musical influences?

Finn:I’m a huge Leonard Cohen fan and it probably rubs off on my writing style and melodies. Our music tastes are pretty broad… (Charles)Mingus to Neil Young to Yes. We draw from a lot of different sources whether purely for inspiration or technique. Sometimes it’s a jingle from some tv ad that gets the wheels rolling. You never know.

Allan: I noticed your band has played a show with Wolf Parade and The Shins, how was it like playing with them?
Finn: They’re all great bands. It’s just fun to watch them play, regardless of whether or not we’re on the bill.

Allan: Since I don’t know much about the Seattle indie music scene, are there any bands you would recommend?

Finn: Zach’s brother, J. Tillman, plays rootsy folk/Americana stuff that’s fantastic. The Fleet Foxes are going to be huge sometime soon. Also, Jaguar Love(made up from former members of The Blood Brothers and Jason Clark from Pretty Girl Make Graves) is a great new band made up of some Seattle folks.
