Rogue Wave: Asleep At Heaven’s Gate Review

Rogue Wave
I heard about Rogue Wave when I heard the addictive yet depressing song “Eyes” on the tv show Heroes. This song seemed good enough for me to check out more songs by them and led me to taking a look of “Asleep At Heaven’s Gate”. A few metacritic users commented that this album really sucked and what do I think? Just keep reading.

This is one of those albums that I kept pushing back and back not willing to review it until now. When usually pushing an album review back it’s not good…

Anyway Rogue Wave is band out of Oakland, California. Apparently previous releases “Out of the Shadow” and “Descended Like Vultures” were very solid if not pretty good.

I really grew tired of this album rather quickly. This album really was hard to listen and it doesn’t get any better when you give it time. Right now I believe there was only one worthy song and it’s Lake Michigan which is a good song with how it’s sung (not too sure about the lyrics though. Otherwise the rest of the album seemed like a tease. Every song it seems like there is an interesting intro yet it doesn’t follow through. I can’t fully listen to a whole song due to being incredibly boring. With soft vocals, nowhere as close as the vocal talent displayed in “Eyes” and with prolonged periods of boring instrumentals, you could say it’s perfect to fall asleep to. While you’d think 5-6 minutes songs are great I think this band could use going to 2-3 minute songs and just cutting what seems like filler. Am I being biased against their “soft” sound? Definitely not. I love the soft stuff but something has to carry it musically whether it’s vocals, instruments or lyrics. I don’t believe this album had either.

I am giving this album a 1.5 out of 5. I debated whether putting out a score…but I’d rather seem like a legitimate reviewer then a guy who gives out 3-5 for everything. Besides if some people disagree it’d be nice to some conversation going on this blog. And I need excuse to post “Eyes” :) .

Thanks to It’s Hard to Find a Friend for the Eyes mp3.

gotta double check my posts….

Eyes by Rogue Wave (recommended listen!)
