St. Vincent (Annie Clark) – Marry Me Review

Annie Clark

I ran across St. Vincent aka Annie Clark quite randomly. I am trying to figure out which song opened the door to me deciding to review this album. I think my curiosity even overlooked the fact that St. Vincent and the title Marry Me gave off that Christian-y vibe that would usually have me running away. It’s weird for me being a non-Christian to listen to artists who are quite open about their beliefs. It asks the question whether I would’ve bothered to listen to Sufjan Stevens had I known…

Anyway back to Annie Clark, religion aside, she’s a 25-year old singer/song writer from Tulsa, Oklahoma with one hell of a beautiful voice. She’s a member of the Polyphonic Spree (who also kinda scare me).

Marry Me does contain some religious lyrics but I’m doing my best to ignore it. Almost everything is sung beautifully on “Marry Me”. With more of a soul/jazzy vibe on these songs it reminds me a bit of some of the songs on Feist’s Let It Die. None of the songs on the album are overly addictive but I find that all these songs are solid and are carried by Clark’s vocal prowess when things are getting dull. I think it’s a great album from top to bottom though at some points I wish I had more substance but I think I guess it gets coming with the style.

I also think her voice is kind of deep in some areas and I guess I don’t enjoy the lack of femininity (at those times…hmm this statement doesn’t come off the way I like it to). Either way there are some beautiful tracks on Marry Me. The titled song “Marry Me”, I would change my name to John for that song…

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Check out my two favorite tracks.

I hardly think of this as “Christian” music. But then again, I don’t think of a deep voice as not “feminine” either.

It’s not exactly “Christian” music but it does make me a tad uncomfortable. Also with her deeper voice, I’m just trying to say I don’t like her voice as much as other female artists.

I enjoyed your review on Devil Doll and am altogether confused by some of your statements regarding St. Vincent as a result.

I’d really encourage you to just dismiss the whole genre issue and focus on the music at hand, judging it on it’s own merits y’know? I’m sure you’d agree that good music is good music regardless of genre.

Given that, as well as how you appreciated Devil Dolls’ 1940’s style-jazz inspiration, I’m curious as to how you miss St. Vincents’ depth.

Try playing Dinah Washington’s version of ‘Embraceable You’ back to back with St. Vincent’s ‘What Me Worry’ and consider that Annie may be part of a movement going back to musical roots with such depth of lyrical writing and arranging (not to mention performance), that for one to say she lacks substance…?

Well…one may as well state that the sun lacks shine.

Outside of that- like what you guys are doing.

    K. I’m outta here.

Well don’t forget that Kevin covered Devil Doll and I covered St. Vincent. We definitely have a very different opinion and tastes when it comes to music. (Pushing female artists or ANY artists on Kevin is a task upon itself).

I actually enjoyed “What Me Worry” actually. Looking back this review was definitely rushed but alas it was during exam time.

I did give it a 4 out of 5 which is a high ranking considering my grading on other things.

There are definitely tracks that has me singing high praises which I did fail to state, I think maybe the album as a whole I was given the impression that Annie Clark is great but I definitely had a feeling of wanting more…

I’ll admit this was a shit review and I’ll try to improve on these ones because I did enjoy the record.

Understanding that what you’re trying to do is tough- I appreciate your efforts.

    You have integrity.

    I like that. Speaks volumes.
