Water Fai – Girls in the White Dream

Water Fai Girls in the White DreamI’ve dabbed in the post-rock genre for awhile now, and I was surprised at the thought of a post-rock band with just females—such a pleasant surprise, really! (Note: Sorry, I misread information; turns out since 2007, Water Fai has introduced a male drummer into the band…ah well, still nice :) ) Water Fai are a post-rock Japanese band from Osaka. Recently signed with White Shoe Records, Girls in the White Dream (2008) consist of songs the band had written from 2003-2006.

Their music features soft guitar-driven melodies and occasionally soothing cascading vocals. One track, “ANA” is notable for heavier distortion with a haunting guitar melody. I’d say Girls in the White Dream is comparable to (though I hestitate to compare for those who hate big names being compared with smaller ones) Mogwai’s Happy Songs for Happy People (2003) (think “Kids Will Be Skeletons” and “Golden Porsche”). The album is bright and this is definitely one I would recommend for those who are just starting to get into the genre. It’s not too intense so that you’d have to “get” into it—it’s more of an easy listen for those who enjoy the genre.

Girls in the White Dream is scheduled to be released April 15, 2008. Be sure to follow with White Shoe Records for information about its release here.
