The Long Blondes – Couples Review

The Long Blondes Couples ReviewThe Long Blondes‘ Someone To Drive You Home was a VERY GOOD album so much so that I was forced to give it a 5 out of 5 for being a perfect album.

A year later, they released their 2nd album “Couples” recently and it received some significant blog hype before Pitchfork spanked it with a poor review. (hmm spanking long blondes…sounds like a porno). I was still excited to say the least.

I have to tell you from the start that I hated the album right off the bat. Stylistically they changed from their post-punk/pop elements to a more new wave style. However instead of being over the top like in their first album, Couples feels subdued.

First vocally, Kate Jackson rarely if ever is singing at the top of her lungs…it feels lazy and while you could use “effortless” as a term the Long Blondes don’t maximize her vocals to the full potential. There’s just not enough soul and emotion. Lyrically it takes a step back which seem much simpler and when is “here comes the serious bit” fitting in a song. I’d figure there would be a better chorus to fit something in rather then “here it comes, here it comes”. Blah. I can write a song like that and if you’ve seen my writing…that’s the biggest insult everrrrr!

The change in styles pissed me off. Why the need to change it? Someone to Drive You Home and the bonus disc that fit with it were perfect. The Long Blondes decided they wanted to be slower, softer and have no guitar synths or anything cool that made The Long Blondes hot. The punk elements was really what set the Long Blondes apart from other pop bands and it was that same style that made their first album such a rousing success. The Long Blondes diverged from being over the top pop with… crap? or really trying to reverse it around and that’s where they ultimately fail.

They changed styles for no reason and tried something new and I think that’s where they ultimately failed. I have no idea what some of the critics are thinking and I think P4K is right but I’m willing to go a step further and say this is utter crap. They went from awesome band in my eyes to super lame. There’s nothing wrong with being “poppy” and usually the range of vocals and adding punk elements that were very enjoyable.

I tried to give it a chance but there’s nothing here for me like. The album is so bad that the planned show to Toronto they were planning, I have scrapped.

Even with less songs and shorter tracks…they do an even worse job with providing quantity and fail in almost every aspect in comparison. Sure you can argue this album is mediocre but it’s a failure in almost every sense of the word. One of the very few albums that got worse and worse as I did the write up and I even called myself a fan of them!

Rating: 1 out of 5

The Long Blondes was someone I wanted to take home, then became someone I wanted to ditch after the night was done!

I’ll post some songs from the North American bonus disc:

All Bar One Girls by The Long Blondes

Fulwood Babylon by The Long Blondes

P.S. I’d provide the obligatory album links to CD stores but if you’re still buying the album it’s best not to buy it here!

You have to let bands move on. If you want another Someone to Drive You Home why don’t you just listen to that album again? Just saw them in London and it was a great show, they’re making a lot of interesting new sounds. I’m sure you won’t be missed in Toronto!

Fair enough. Well that’s exactly what I’m doing just listening to StdYH. I would feel weird if I went to a show where there is an album I absolutely hated. It’s a little strange though since I’m polar opposites on the albums.

I also am not a fan of moving on. It’s been just one year between releases. It’s not like it’s been a whole decade where they can pick up on another “cool” style. Bands should learn to be themselves and besides if you have success with one method why drastically change it? Change for the sake for change is dumb.

Its not only a year between releases, sotdyh was originally released in 2006. What with it being their debut album, many of the songs on there are in fact much older than that. Giddy Stratospheres, for instance, was originally released in 2004.

“I also am not a fan of moving on …It’s not like it’s been a whole decade where they can pick up on another “cool” style. Bands should learn to be themselves and besides if you have success with one method why drastically change it? Change for the sake for change is dumb”
    This is stultifyingly ill informed.

Psh a year for me. I don’t care how old the tracks are anyway. I’m in North America so my first exposure to the Long Blondes was in 2007. I usually don’t care when music is made and rather when it’s first heard. The argument still holds that for SOME people The Long Blondes isn’t an old album. Most fans are new and it’s such a big fucking deal on technicalities.

The main argument was that the album wasn’t good. I love how you guys stay anonymous and I at least have the balls to share my opinion. The fact is that their “change” or evolution” was done so poorly I HAD to call them out on it. It’s so bad I’d videotape myself taking a shit on it.

I stand by it and you’ve done nothing to change my opinion but call me “stultifyingly ill informed”. Ooh I know the difference between British releases but I actually bought StdYH. Even the NA bonus disc was better then “Couples”.

The fact it hasn’t been long and change should only be done by a select few. This album is shit and that’s what I honestly feel. Do Bands not realize “Evolution” is the death of MANY bands and only few bands ever evolve to become great.

Whether you like the album or not, criticising a band for evolving their sound is ridiculous. Artists tastes can change, releasing identical sounding albums time after time can become very boring for both them and the listener. Aside from this, much of the best music to have been recorded is made when artists take themselves out of their comfort zone and try something different. The only thing that can kill a band more effectively than evolving their sound is not evolving their sound.
I’m not sure what “actually” buying sotdyh has to do with anything, though as far as i’m aware the extra material on the north american release were recorded in the original sessions with Erol Alkan that went on to form Couples.
Anonymity is irrelevant, i don’t know who you are and you don’t know who I am, posting an email address would make no difference.

I don’t think it’s ridiculous to criticize a band for evolving into something subpar or less than what they were. People don’t criticize Radiohead because the stuff they put out is great.

When evolving, there are right ways to approach it and there are wrong ways. I think it’s more of a slow progression that I’m looking for. I don’t want to see drastic changes just because that’s the “cool” thing to do. A band can be different while remaining true to their fan base. I want to see baby steps while giving their same fans a test of what was liked and then new stuff. In general “Couples” was a much weaker effort all around whether evolving or not.

Time and time again I see “evolution” where a band just totally messes up and sometimes it’s better to stay at what you’re good at rather then not. Some people are better fitted when they are forced to make something different but I think it’s clear in this case they fall flat on their feet.

Evolution does piss me off but I don’t mind when a band puts out something good and I’d note it when I review it.

I don’t even know what this record was supposed to put up. It felt rather direction-less and if they took another year with it such as adding more with the vocals. I think people are at loss at what this record is supposed to be. Is it supposed to something you dance to? I don’t think thats the point but it remains unclear.

Sorry for my poor response before but The Long Blondes are still rather new and yeah anonymity doesn’t matter (I forgot you put your email). Either way I didn’t like your response as you didn’t like my review :P .
They COULD have at least taken longer to refine the album. It’s a boring album in general (I love new wave but it seems like they aren’t good at it).

From what I’ve read quite this album seems to be very polarized (except among critics…even the bad reviews are shitty). I’ve definitely stated my case to why I hate “couples”. Prove me wrong.

It’s all down to taste… but if you’re actually open to being proved wrong (wrong sounds so harsh a word — if you’re open to having your mind changed shall we say) then go to the show and see if you don’t enjoy yourself. The set they’re doing now is great stuff, old mixed in with new, and you end up with a really strong lineup.

  8. Allan — May 1, 2008 @ 9:35 am

Fair enough, they are known for a strong live show at least. I would probably want only the old though. I’ll go to the show if I get on the guest list (which I highly doubt), low on cash and two concerts in two days will be enough (Los Campesinos!).
