Pomegranates – Everything Is Alive Review
When I first heard the Pomegranates I thought there was a woman in this band. There was a singer with an EXTREMELY high voice. Instead it’s more like Wheatus (you know that song Teenage Dirtbag) that it’s a guy just singing. In addition The Poms (much easier to write) have another singer who’s on the opposite end of the spectrum who most would argue is the typical singing done in indie rock. The best possible classification would be to call them “emotive indie rock” or emo indie if you’d like.
I have no problems against Emo the genre. It’s the fans and not the music people hate. Joe is a self-professed lover of emo but you don’t see him cutting his wrists (it’s assumed…I don’t go around looking at his wrists everytime lol). Besides if you boycott a type of music because of what people say without looking at things objectively…it just means you’re a dick but there’s a ton of them out there that they completely dismiss artists due to this fact. Your loss and you are every bit of a poser as they are.
Anyway, while I do hate the vocals at times, the real saving grace for The Poms is that musically it is one of the better albums out there. It’s hard to ignore such songs like Whom/Who when the guitar melodies are both danceable and something to be amazed at. I refuse to use the word “indie” to describe them. They are very original with intertwining the two different vocalists with guitar arrangements that you would see an art punk band playing. It’s hardly pop that when they call themselves pop…it almost feels like a joke to call their music simpler when in fact it’s quite complex.
At times it’s very random but catchy at the same time. Almost direction-less but you’ll allow this album to take you along for the ride. Not very genre specific, you can call it punk, emo, pop, art but it won’t ever give the listener a full understanding of what they’re going to get.
The only song I didn’t really like was “Desert Hymn” as it is very soft/slow and it feels out of place and I usually want to go to a more upbeat album. It does have the line “I heard Jesus was coming back…to become a wonderful dancer”. I don’t think it’s a bad track as there are a ton of elements that sit in the background that make it at least a decent listen.
A very very good album. I planned to bash Weezer today but my laptop is in need of repairs so I had to review an album I’ve been listening to for the past few weeks.
