Kinch – Advances Review

Kinch Advances Review
Kinch sent one of the more straightforward e-mails (thanks) included with a joke with a person saying they were “Weezer good, Pankerton good”. I usually don’t have a sense of humor when going through the 20 e-mails or so a day I get from bands and promoters but they definitely made it easy to just click their link and check out their music.

Kinch is out of Phoenix, Arizona and is releasing their album for free with a creative commons license. It must be tough to give your album away, hopefully they have quite a bit of crowd on hand for their shows.

Much to my surprise they are pretty good. Weezer’s not the band that comes to mind. They definitely have a southern type mojo to their music as they constantly switch between soft acoustic moments though at times they have moments with some awesome garage rock in songs like All I’ve Done. I’ll drop a small comparison to Black Rebel Motorcycle as I’ve only listened to them just a little.

Kinch does many things well and this album definitely has its moments. Andrew of the band is a great singer and he doesn’t need any help to shine on his own however the band is pretty great with awesome guitar playing by Brian Coughlin with riffs that are either space-rock type or bluesy.

Advances’ is a pretty good album, if not great. They add an incredible amount of different styles all over the album and not one song is the same. They sound like a different band with each and every track

This album really snuck up on me and the best part is that its FREE. You can see what I mean. I didn’t think I would like this album too much but after awhile I realized I did like every song. Maybe I’m not that ecstatic (when I say every song on the album is decent) but I have tip my hat to Kinch. Lyrically it’s not the greatest but still I love it. “I’m so tired of being alone, at least I’m used to by now, I read magazines til midnight then I sleep and I dream of you” is an example of their solid songs.

Rating: 4.25 out of 5
