Son Of Dave – 03 Review
I remember the Crash Test Dummies in passing and I remember vaguely remembering their band but nonetheless I can’t remember a song by them. Anyway they had mainstream success which is probably why I do recognize the Winnipeg’s band name in the least.
One of the members, Benjamin Darvill started his solo project, Son of Dave in 1999 which in essence is a nice mix of folk rock and blues.
When checking out Son of Dave’s myspace, I noticed his unique covers of two songs. Daft Punk’s Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger and War’s Low-rider, are done brilliantly. Both songs are given the blues spin and while Lowrider seems to sound similar, structurally there’s a whole ton to like.
While covers may not the most artistic thing, I think it does help bridge the gap between non-traditional blues lovers to appreciate the genre. I would say I definitely had a greater appreciation after listening to those. Lowrider also happens to be the album.
From a musical standpoint, I think this album is awesome. I’m not a big blues fan in general but what I find is the use of instruments and sounds just as effective as many other artists today. I think I hear a lot of beatboxing in addition to the use of a variety of instruments. It seems like a non-stop jam session that I can appreciate.
One problem or issue I have with this album is that it’s weak lyrically or vocally. Though I guess it’s not supposed to be great with more a concentration on the music. I still wish it could give more on that front as it would propel this album to great heights. I also don’t understand the Your Mercedes (intro) which is at 30 seconds and Your Mercedes is also the 8th track. Seems kind of illogical and I don’t want to figure out the connection.
I think I covered all I wanted to. Son of Dave bridges the generation gap making an enjoyable blues record. It can be great and at times I must say I’m amazed. I’m generally left with more appreciation of blues.
