Eric Hutchinson – Sounds Like This
About two years ago, I was sitting on a plane to Florida about to tear my hair out when my sister tosses me her headphones and tells me I have to listen to “this guy Eric Hutchinson”. Since I didn’t have anything better to do I took her word for it and listened. I was immediately transformed into a Hutchhead and to this day I cannot stop listening to Eric Hutchinson who was just recently plucked from obscurity and signed to Warner Brothers Records. When infamous celebrity blogger Perez Hilton “discovered” Hutchinson and wrote about the singer on his website, the spotlight was thrust upon him and his album “Sounds Like This” peaked at #9 on iTunes. You can also buy his album from his official website and listen to more of his music on his MySpace page. Now, Hutchinson is singing and touring his way to the very top of the Mt. Everest that is the music industry. It’s about damn time someone gave him some recognition.
“Sounds Like This” is like a diamond in the rough. If Archimedes were listening to Eric Hutchinson when he stepped into the bathtub, he would yell “Eureka!” over this album, not the water. Each song is uniquely different from the one before and after it. For example, in the song/personal favourite “You Don’t Have to Believe Me”, the different instruments create a fun, upbeat song that complements the tongue-in-cheek lyrics.
When his acoustic guitar and soulful voice blend together, the result is a catchy pop/rock song that is easy-listening for anyone. His first single “Rock & Roll” is a reggae-tinged song that you just can’t help but to sing along. The sixth track on the record (that will hopefully be the next single because it’s amazing) is simply titled “Oh!”. This song’s lyrics will actually make you laugh out loud. Well, I did. Although the majority of his songs are playful finger-snappers, there are a few that show Hutchinson’s serious side such as “Back to Where I Was”, with lyrics like “New life decides to come through the front door/And makes us wish we’d shown respect before/Though I don’t have a choice/I resolve to regain my voice”.
After two EP’s, this album is the product of a fair amount of hard-work and dedication that is evident in each song. It is rare that one comes across an artist that seems to have this innate ability to sing, play and perform as well as Eric Hutchinson does. I would know, I’ve watched all of his YouTube videos.
