Ray Garrison EP

Ray Garrison EPThis week I’m writing about a little known gem from the South, Ray Garrison, currently known as The Media Says. When this EP was released, he was a solo artist, but as a member of The Media Says, Ray has become a part of a very promising band. However, this EP showed that Ray was well on his way to success even before the formation of his band. And although only 4 tracks long, this boy from Georgia has made some pretty delicious, pop-driven tunes.

We begin the journey with Eve, the first song on the EP. With a soft but never sombre tone, it satisfies that musical craving just right. Definitely a summer oriented EP, the song begins with choir like backing vocals which make appearances throughout. These backing vocals give way to a hopeful, mellow atmosphere, hence the summer feel. In retrospect, the verse follows in similar fashion with really light vocals that precede the chorus, which again is the same deal. The chorus is particularly catchy because it comes off like pop songs from the 90’s, mellow and embellished. As for the quality of the vocals, they are no where near amazing, but Ray has a naturally cool sounding voice, that which can be imagined from a stereotypical Californian. The guitar work in this track is of interest as well. While nothing complex, Ray uses a surreal grunge effect, reminiscent of Angels and Airwaves. Combined is a track that highlights some great powerpop sounds.

Get Up, the second track, get’s a little more rocking, beginning with the vocals. The verse has a somewhat aggressive backbone, with a sterner sound we begin to hear a more rock oriented track. Though there are more prominent vocals, it yet again conveys that summer feel. Ray still makes use of the spacey riffs like the first track. Besides the chorus, there’s not much that comes off as extremely catchy in this track, but it is a nice listen nonetheless.

Best Shot changes things up a bit with the addition of some wild guitar effects and hard hitting vocals. Completely out of realm from the other tracks, it is an epic rock track. When I first heard it, I automatically thought of a band called Ash. With catchy lyrics and a groovy melody, it has shown a more rock-solid version of Ray Garrison, which may be a one time thing or could be pursued further. The nice thing about this track is how well produced it is for an unsigned band.

Finally That Pretty Gurl ends the Ray Garrison EP with a classic powerpop track. From the theme to the vocals, everything is just a fun little pop song wrapped in a punk package. It has a catchy chorus line, affectionate verses, and a prominent guitar riff. It’s also catchy enough to remain memorable, creating a typical, but still incredible sound.

With such creative tracks coming from a solo artist, it’s going to be exciting to hear what The Media Says will release in the future. This solo artist gone band, is sure to create some buzz with an EP to be recorded and released by October. Check out The Media Says, fronted by the man himself, Ray Garrison.
