Keane – Perfect Symmetry Review

Keane Perfect Symmetry Review
I’ll be honest, I was a big fan of Keane in high school and it not because of the Coldplay comparisons they were unfortunately labeled after their first album Hopes and Fears. While Hopes and Fears had its solid moments, Under The Iron Sea was a pretty good album in my opinion after having been renewed with it the past few weeks.

Keane isn’t as bad nor lame as most people would like to believe, people in general are pretty ignorant about their musical choices (heck, I won’t listen to a Britney Spears album, despite whatever you say). Keane has progressed pretty far from their Coldplay similarities and in my opinion shed that off a long time ago.

Keane’s Perfect Symmetry was released on October 13 and to not much surprise, many of the critics once again hated the album while they produced another #1 top selling album in the UK, their third out of three albums. I don’t put too much stock in top selling albums as most things pop – do suck.

Perfect Symmetry uses more of a new-wave vibe ala the Killers and less piano-rock and more pop then ever before. They’ve really gone to the extreme from Hopes and Fear further “evolving” into a totally whole new band. Where Keane tries on this album, they actually fail on a lot of parts of this album. There are some sections just don’t seem to work. While some of the music is catchy, Tom Chaplin’s vocals just seem too good for a fast paced track that it just comes off kind of bland and contrived.

The album produces more hits then misses in my opinion though they produced some good songs in the album’s core such as Better than This and You Haven’t Told Me Anything, it’s a little disappointing. Keane does try to be a better band ultimately so I can’t fully fault them but I just think they are a better band when stripped down to simplicity and led by a great vocalist.

Rating: 2.5/5
Not that I hate Keane, I actually like them, it’s either that maybe I’ve moved on or that Keane has moved onto a new sound that just didn’t make sense. I’m choosing the latter because I still enjoy their old records a whole lot more. Critics still hate them but the hate was ridiculous then and even now.
