The Dead Trees – King of Rosa
It’s been a long time since I’ve been introduced to the Dead Trees. I’ve had a chance to listen to their work for about 2 months now.
The Dead Trees are a folk/Americana band out of Portland, Oregon a common hotspot for those genres. I really wanted to check out the rest of the music due to the song “Shelter”. In “Shelter” I was really surprised when the lead vocalist, Michael Cummings ends up screaming on the top of his lungs, “I think I need a little shelter for me and for you” etc. This remains the stand out moment for me on this album because the Dead Trees came out a shell that isn’t done elsewhere with their laid back folk/Americana style.
I’ve had some trouble with this album, I’ve put it off week after week. It’s not that anything is bad. It’s more on the safe/boring side. Risks need to be made in order to be noticed and while The Dead Trees seem like they have a big enough fan base that is ever growing, they aren’t quite over that proverbial hump. They got noticed for their first album, “Fort Music” which I haven’t heard.
The Dead Trees do everything well enough but I can’t really point to any strengths or weaknesses. They have some pop sensibilities, some experimentation, some Southern flare but I’m just not overly enamored by anything.
Each song individually isn’t bad but put together it feels a little tiresome and does lead me to want to review another album/artist.
That’s really all I can think of, some decent stuff but perhaps unlikely to wow many of us.
Rating: 3 out of 5
