Magneta Lane @ The Horseshoe Tavern
I’ve been a Magneta Lane fan since playing their song Wild Gardens as often as I could sneak it into my play list during my college radio station days. That tune could always mellow me out and bring positive musical refuge to an otherwise uninteresting musical selections of my college station.
Realizing that Magneta Lane were slated to play the Horseshoe Tavern recently, there was no question about my possibility of attendance.
I’m always a fan of female bands that can give a resounding and credible “piss off” to the typical female sound of oversexed pointless tarts whose only fans are uncreative girls and unintelligent guys muttering; “ya… I’d do them”. Magneta Lane’s edgy and meaningful lyrics and easily shifting sound from rocking to thoughtful melodies definitely puts them in this better female musician bracket.
Their show at the Horseshoe was enjoyable and what I was expecting for the most part; Lexi’s solid vocals, Nadia providing a well oiled engine room on drums, and French on bass mesmerizing me by her strumming hand looking like as if in constant state of controlled electrocution. The Horseshoe seemed a little on the empty side, (mid week with ugly winter weather to blame always hurts) this took a bit of a toll on the vibe I guess, and as always you wish a favourite band would have played longer. They played a good mix of songs from their albums. I found myself rushing up the stairs from the bathroom as they gently fired up into Wild Gardens trying not to miss anymore valuable seconds of that awesome and memorable song for me.
They are one of my favourite local Toronto bands. So much so that I’ve found myself buying their previous album; Dancing With Daggers more than once, using it as a Toronto based musical souvenir for friends when I travel abroad. I’m proud that their positive sound has been honed in close proximity of my own stomping grounds.
They have a new album coming out sometime in the near future entitled; Gambling With God, I’m quite eagerly awaiting its release and you should too.
