The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Every so often it everyone likes to put on some nostalgic music. Going back and taking out the old White Stripes CD from high school, or listening to some old 80s pop that you know you should like but you do. Well if that is up your alley then The Pains of Being Pure at Heart debut self-titled album is up your alley.
The band name summarizes the band pretty well, as there is always that bit of innocence to all of their songs. The songs are all fairly ordinary twee indiepop songs, but they all have the same feel as a John Hughes movie. There is the young hopeful attitude reminiscent of those glory days of Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles. Its feeling Twee is supposed to have, something more modern day twee pop bands are missing.
Yet even though it may sound rather generic at times there’s actually quite a bit going on. There is a small element of noise rock to it, with some heavy feedbacky distorted guitar going on in the back round of most of the songs. Luckily The Pains of Being Pure at Heart pull this off, having it fit in with songs instead of being a pain on the ears (pun intended).
Overall the album is great, it seems like a return to the glory days of tweepop, sounding a lot like something Tiger Trap or Go Sailor would do. It is a fresh restyling of a great genre. Hopefully this will lead the way to a rebirth of Tweepop, or at least a few more modern nostalgic albums.
