Matt and Kim – Grand Review
I first heard about Matt & Kim back in 2005 when I stumbled upon a few mp3s from their then-upcoming debut. I enjoyed the tracks, but for one reason or another I never ended up getting the album. 3 years later, they released their sophomore album Grand, and I’m sitting here wondering why I never bought their first CD.
Grand is a quick half-hour of bouncy pop keyboards and frantic, happy drumbeats. The album opens and closes with two different versions of the song ‘Daylight’. The first version is an upbeat, catchy tune with an odd but funny video. The remixed outro is essentially the same song slowed down. Both are great songs.
In between the Daylights is a solid string of quick, lovable pop tunes. ‘Good Ol’ Fashioned Nightmare’ features one of the catchiest synth riffs you’ve ever heard, and I dare you to listen to it without dancing. The beat in ‘Spare Change’ sounds like a remixed ‘We Will Rock You’ with table thumps, claps, and snaps. ‘Don’t Slow Down’ has a perfect beat for running and has been on my jogging playlist since I got the CD. And whenever I hear ‘Cinders’, its frenetic synths make me feel like I should be at a carnival surrounded by flashing lights, trying to throw a baseball into a clown’s mouth.
The one problem I thought I would have with this album is that all of Matt & Kim’s songs sound so similar, and with enough time, that could get annoying. However, at less than 30 minutes, Grand doesn’t give me sufficient time to get annoyed. This is a fun album from a quirky, cute band. While the songs may get repetitive, they’re still great songs. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoys simple, happy pop music.
