Blonde Redhead – Melody Of Certain Damaged Lemons Review

Blonde Redhead Melody Of Certain Damaged Lemons Review

Today is one of those sombre days for me. So it’s all about Blonde Redhead’s 2000 Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons. I know it’s an old album, but honestly, this album was ahead of its time. It blends in with the sounds that independent artists today, in fact sounding more innovative than some. I think the reason why I like this album so much is strictly because it’s an emotional album. I can barely understand what the singer, Japanese singer Kazu Makino is singing.

Blonde Redhead is comprised of Japanese vocalist/guitarist Kazu Makino and Italian twins Amedeo (vocals/guitar) and Simone Pace (drums). They are often compared to the Sonic Youth, rightfully so, but I believe that Blonde Redhead can still remain distinctive despite the similarity. Obviously you’ll like Blonde Redhead if you like Sonic Youth, but also if you like music that has opposite elements, the darkness of the track with the softness of the melody. The hardness of the drums combines with the whispers of the voices. The melodies are very haunting. They tracks are original sounding, easily made for a soundtrack of a dark movie. I have to be honest, I’m lacking the vocabulary to desdribe their sound. I have to say that it’s a mix of piano pieces, soft whispers, heavy drumming and guitars.

I love the piano piece in For The Damaged, it’s so haunting (again) and beautiful. It reminds me of Chopin pieces (my current obsession in the car). The quality of her voice fits the song perfectly. And again in Hated Because Of Great Qualities, where it’s only her, the drums and the occasional guitars. Balled Of Lemons is very spacy sounding track.

My favourites: Hated Because Of Great Qualities, Loved Despite Of Great Faults, and For The Damaged.

After Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons comes Misery is a Butterfly(2004) and 23 (2007)
