CBC Radio 3 to Shut Down?
The poor economy is sending huge ripples within the music industry such as Touch and Go (perhaps temporarily) shutting down distribution and others like Sirius Radio on the edge of being shutting down too, it was only a matter of time, other programs are awaiting to be axed.
Tough times indeed. Anyway the latest music program to potentially bite the dust is Canada’s popular CBC Radio 3. When looking at it, it doesn’t come as much surprise, the government is going into deficit spending more into unemployment programs and bailing out companies, government funding into something like the CBC. Spending dollars on CBC Radio 3 just doesn’t cut it for most of the population (unfortunately spending into the arts isn’t either). Yes we’re in the minority, the only thing I would hope for, instead of the government saving it would be to hope that someone purchases it. It would run better with the hopes of driving a more popular website.
Don’t get me wrong, CBC Radio 3 is a great resource for listening to Canadian bands, it serves as a Canadian myspace with some radio programming that artists wouldn’t get anywhere. I personally don’t find myself visiting the website all that often. Under ownership maybe they would try to make some money and expanding? That’s ultimately the downfall on the website, it’s a comfortable nice looking site but it doesn’t seem to be getting better….
Ultimately if it gets shut down entirely that would be disastrous. Canadian indie artists relies on too little resources for promotion and a long way in between big markets, it’s still pretty hard to get more then just a handful popular bands. I could go forever why its hard being an indie, self-promoted Canadian band.
Still, with the economy being terrible, it’s about holding your own weight or going home. Hopefully it doesn’t get shut down but they definitely could compel me to listen more. I’ll keep updates on this situation.
