Every Time I Die Interview

Every Time I Die in some ways are a changed band. Their new record brought them greater fame, recognition and critical acclaim in the alternative, punk and alt. metal scenes, along with more festival dates and headline tours. But as Toronto saw last November, many aspects of the band are thankfully the same. “Our live show actually hasn’t changed,” says lead vocalist Keith Buckley. “Last night in Ottawa it was like I just got out of the shower. Everyone was dripping sweat and you couldn’t breathe. I loved it – it was just so much fun. “

Toronto was no exception. ETID’s show saw the Opera House packed for one of the most intense and engaging concerts of 2008. The well known climax in “Off Broadway” was met with a roar from the audience so powerful, that Buckley appeared genuinely shocked at the end of the song, commenting “that in all honesty is the loudest we’ve ever heard an audience scream a line at our show.”

Seemingly, there’s no better time than election night in America for a band like ETID to rock out in Toronto. Updating the audience on Obama’s lead in the polls towards the end of the show, the band didn’t hide the significance of that night to them. “[A recession] is definitely a concern. I wouldn’t quit the band, I guess if it gets to the point I can’t pay my rent I’d have to rethink things,” says Keith. “Hopefully the next 4-5 months we start to see an incline in the economy, if the right guy wins tonight, which is Barack Obama Obviously. We’ll see. It’s a concern, I can’t believe it actually is a concern.”

But with a new album already on the horizon and a passionate fan base behind them, ETID’s future isn’t looking too shabby. When asked if he was intimidated about having to outdo his last record, Keith responded, “yes I am. But that’s what makes it fun it’s the concept of pushing ourselves. I feel like [the Big Dirty] is the most comprehensive thorough writing experience I’ve ever had. I’m very happy with it.”
