Canadian Music Week/Festival Concert Preview

Canadian Music Week/Festival Concert Preview

I personally won’t be seeing any shows (knee surgery June 10th, so maybe end of the year I can safely do some concert going?), this year but this is the first year we’ve been accredited for AWmusic.ca. Canadian Music Week’s music festivities kick off tomorrow and last for a full 5 days. You can get wristbands for $50 for all 5 days – a bargain to say the least. While I won’t be there, we have 3 writers: Sheila, Adrian and George attending and reviewing various shows across festival. It should be a fun week on this site. Anyway the artist list for CMW is extensive. The sheer number makes it impossible for one to see all the acts one would want to see. So I present to you each writer’s proposed schedule:
(Subject to change)
George:
Wednesday: Gladstone Hotel -The Job (London/myspace), Everything All the Time (Toronto/myspace), Foxfire (Toronto/myspace), Lioness (Toronto/myspace/previous review), Mansion
Thursday @ Cadillac Lounge: Andy Stedman, Agpak Mum, Captains, My Jerusalem, The Rosie Jones Band (Toronto/myspace)
Friday @ Cadillac Lounge: Chiwawa, Casual Projects, Two Foot Falls (Toronto/myspace), Redeye Empire, Organic Funk
Saturday @Sneaky Dee’s: Baptized in Blood, A Textbook Tragedy, Forgiven Rival (Australia/myspace), Sights & Sounds, The Holly Springs Disaster (Regina/myspace)

Adrian: *Will probably see more bands then proposed but he’s going to be venue jumping so not going to make predictions
Wednesday: Inward Eye and Acres of Lions.
Thursday: The Trews (myspace/previous review) and As Blood Runs Black.
Friday: Dead and Devine, The Johnstones (Ajax/myspace/previous post), Ten Second Epic (Edmonton/myspace)
Saturday: USS, The Holly Springs Disaster, and A Textbook Tragedy.
Maybe Arkells and IllScarlett if possible (limited wristband shows).

Sheila:
Wednesday -CMW Kick Off Party! @ The Tattoo Rock Parlour: Bury the Buly, Isle of Thieves, Songs From A Room and Inward Eye.
Thursday : Framework, We Are Wolves, Malajube, Crash Parallel, Naughty By Nature
Friday: The D’Urbervilles (Toronto/myspace/previous post), Emma Lee (Toronto/myspace/previous post), Hot Panda, Billy the Kid, and The Junction (Brampton/myspace).
Saturday at The Horseshoe Tavern: Rebekah Higgs, Young Galaxy, Two Hours Traffic (myspace/previous post), The Golden Dogs (Toronto/myspace), Hexes and Ohs, Vancougar, Dave Marsh and True Love Rules

AND this is me giving up on myspace links. You have their schedules ;) .

Here is also a list of notable bands in no particular order:
Chad Van Gaalen
Women
Amos The Transparent
An Horse (look for a CD review)
Basia Bulat
Crystal Castles
Beast
Bloc Party
Sloan
Candy Coated Killahz (never answered my request at a review copy…)
Holy Fuck
The Rural Alberta Advantage
and MORE. It’s a lot of bands, it’s as good as it gets when it comes to indie rock so I’m a sad puppy that I can’t attend.

Some assorted MP3s from various artists:
After All That, It’s Come To This by Amos The Transparent (featuring Amy Millan of Stars)
Mercury by Bloc Party
Black Rice by Women
Backseat Sweetheart by Two Hours Traffic
Lovely Allen by Holy Fuck

These previews take far too long but yes be sure to come back during the week for a massive amount of concert reviews.

It’s times like this that I really miss living in Toronto. The closest thing we’re getting to this in Vancouver is JunoFest ‘09. meh.

Hmm yeah, you do have the Sasquatch Festival nearby I guess. I’m not sure how close Alberta is but they have that really cool festival in which the name behooves me.

I’d love to see Holy Fuck, but they’re only opening for Bloc Party, which will be hard to get into.

Plus, the Bloc Party are hella overrated.

Yeah that’s a bummer, with limited wristband entry, it’s not worth seeing. I’ll probably see Holy Fuck eventually.

  5. Tyson (ACRES OF LIONS) — March 11, 2009 @ 1:29 pm

Awesome guys…hopefully one of you will make it to see my band (Acres Of Lions) at CMW! If you miss us tonight at the Horseshoe (11 PM) we’re playing thursday at the rok boutique (9PM) and sunday at rancho relaxo (midnight).

    Cheers,
    Tyson / ACRES OF LIONS

Adrian specifically selected your band to see, so unless something disastrous occurs on his trip to see you, he’s definitely going to review you guys :) .

  7. Canadian Invasion — March 11, 2009 @ 6:31 pm

Saturday at the Horseshoe should be a good one!

it’s actually Hexes & Ohs (it’s all about the ampersand). They are a dynamic electro-pop duo and you can find them online at myspace.com/hexesandohs. They also have a second CMW show, opening for Sloan at the Mod Club on Thursday night.

  8. Allan — March 11, 2009 @ 8:38 pm

If it’s all about the ampersand why is it not: myspace.com/hexes&ohs :P .
