BIGIDEAS live at The Horseshoe & Album Review

So Friday was fun…

BIGIDEAS live at The Horseshoe & Album Review

About a month ago I’ve been invited by somebody to BIGIDEAS debut album launch gig at The Horseshoe and it was one of those dates in my calendar that I was really looking forward to (much like my bi-weekly pay-cheque and monthly “screw all, I’m getting obliterated” day). The reason being that I heard a couple of their songs (and really liked the sound) but never seen them play live. So there I was – standing in a dimly lit room of the renowned Horseshoe with a bottle of chilled (yeah, that’s right “chilled” not “ice cold”) Steam Whistle (yeah, that’s right, Steam Whistle, not Heineken), waiting for BIGIDEAS to take the stage while watching moderately tipsy people going ape-shit on each other’s ears (what? it’s loud, you have to yell!).

But enough about me, what’s new with you? Wait… never mind, I always forget that I’m not that interested.

It’s 11 30 (or something like that… and yes, I know – smooth transition) and BIGIDEAS play their first song, which I think they could’ve done so much better, but then… they play a second one and I think that I shouldn’t be thinking anymore because boy, do they exceed my expectations?! There are a lot of bands out there that sound good on the record but can’t quite pull it off live, there are some bands that excite your feelings both on stage and through your speakers, and there are few that fcuking rock live and make you want to hit re-play every time the album ends. Enter BIGIDEAS

So I’ve got only two words to summarize their live performance AWE-SOME. The bass is tight, the guitar is sexy, the drums are freaking nuts and the vocals make you wish you knew the lyrics to be able to sing along. That’s all I have to say about them. And yet… I’ll talk some more (because we all know how much you enjoy reading my stuff).

So, if you by any chance went to the Horseshoe this Friday – you got your copy of their debut full-length Steady State. If not – you can check it out as soon as it becomes available… and you really really should. According to their MySpace it’s March 24th.

BIGIDEAS live at The Horseshoe & Album Review

BIGIDEAS began working on this album in March 2007 with their friend and audio engineer Andrew Noakowski who’d done one hell of a good job making this record. It took them two years to shape this thing into what it is now – a great sounding album that will set the mood for your day, I promise.

This is where I disagree with people from Herohill – while I couldn’t really find any songs that I would consider being huge radio hits (and for all I care – thank whatever deity you pray to for that) – the album in it’s entirety feels VERY thought-through and whole. The drums deserve some special mentioning because man, they rock! Every instrument is in it’s rightful place and even though an occasional guitar jumps out at you, completely grabbing your attention with it’s tonality and musicality (see what I did there?) – everything sounds just as it should… and is very very good.

Here’s an interesting observation that I made while listening to this album for the third time today (on my way to work, back from work, and right now) – it made me loose any perception of time. I don’t know why or how but Steady State managed to wrap me up inside of it’s melodic fabric and didn’t let me go until the very last song. And yes, melodic fabric. You’ll see what I mean if and when you get yourself a copy.

I can’t really put my finger on WHAT exactly do I like so much about this album but I really do like it. Check it out for yourself and then if you are kind enough – leave me a comment saying what you think about it and what are your thoughts on songs not being radio hits.

All in all – Steady State is a beautifully produced and great sounding album… and that is all that matters, right?

Not sure why you couldn’t see some of their better songs on the radio, and more my point was as they keep playing and getting better, the songs will improve and the audiences will get bigger.

They already write songs that could appeal to bigger audiences – unless you were the only person there that found it AWE-SOME and wanted to sing along (isn’t that what people want to do with popular songs??? – and lots of melodic acts get radio play. The band even says they are trying to find the line between Keane and The Dears…

I’ve been diggin BigIdeas for awhile after seeing them at the shoe a few years a ago. Steady State is above expectations and a good listen. Radio play is inevitable, there sound is too crisp not to get some love. Do you really need radio play anymore? Can’t hurt though;) They are locked in my ipod.

Let me elaborate on what I mean by saying “radio hit”. For me “radio hit” is a song that’s being played on the radio every hour and after about a week everybody gets pissed off.

I see songs like “Patching Holes (In A Sinking Ship)” and “Blind Eyes” being played on the radio, but becoming radio hits? I really hope not.

Even the coolest picture looks like shit if overexposed.

All I’m saying is that I hope that instead of writing POPULAR songs they will continue writing GOOD songs. The rest will come along.

Hey Alex… I don’t want to come off like a total asshole, but here’s my point. First, I actually had no idea who you were – Allan has like 400 writers :) – so I had to do a quick search on your review.

Seems like talking about Franz, The Frames, an anti-U2 post and NIN are about as radio friendly as most blogs get, so I would relax about talking about how you hate the radio, hope none of your fav bands get popular, and getting people to support the fact the band isn’t ready for radio and just talk about the music and how you see it.

That being said, I don’t know if I’d say there is much difference between a band like BIGIDEAS – or in years past, Pilate – getting radio play and getting played every hour. All radio repeats the same shit unless you only listen to campus radio, but the point is they right songs you COULD hear on the radio and they wouldn’t seem out of place.

I’d wager if they touch fans like that, chances are, they COULD get radio love and hit bigger crowds. I never said they were the next Fray or some popular band writing watered down radio hits.

Hey Ack, the comment somehow ended up in spam. Fixing that so it doesn’t happen again.

    P.S.

    It’s not that many :P .

Well slap me silly, if I didn’t know any better I’d assume that we’re having an argument here!

Here’s the thing… I think you’re missing my point by a few inches (not a huge miss, but you still missed it).

Here’s how I know that you’re missing my point: “…so I would relax about talking about how you hate the radio, hope none of your fav bands get popular, and getting people to support the fact the band isn’t ready for radio and just talk about the music and how you see it…”

I wish I had more time to sit here and continue not-arguing… but it’s just that I really don’t want to.

You see, I included the link to your article because I thought it was well written (much like your last one about K-OS) and it provided our beloved readers a glimpse of “the other side”. A different opinion, if you like.

It’s all a matter of preference, like I said before. That was my opinion on the subject and I respect people who disagree with me. I’m not saying that my comment about radio is one and only truth, which is why I asked people to comment.

The problem with all of this is that I’m a genius, you’re a genius and everybody is a fucking genius and we will never agree with each other. And that’s fine because we all have opinions and all of them are true.

So I never argue for I think it’s a waste of my and my opponent’s time.

    It’s our nature. Never compromise.

May the force be with you.

P.s. It was not me who flagged your comment as spam, I’m above that :)

    Askimet just didn’t like Ack.

I actually wrote that K-Os post, and I’m not about to let the Ack take credit for anything of mine that is, as you so kindly pointed out, well written.

I wish I could say the same about your last comment. Bit of a newsflash for you: pretty much anyone with a blog tracks their referrals, so if you’re going to write about how you disagree with someone, don’t get all defensive if they call you on it.

  9. Alex — March 26, 2009 @ 1:49 pm

Did I or did I not say that everybody is a fucking genius!? :)

Sure I’ll get all defensive if a person’s missing my point and turning it around (ever so slightly.) Why shouldn’t I? I take sick pleasure in talking to people who think that proving anything to me will somehow matter :)

If someone disagreed with me (which is the case here) I’d find their point of view interesting and wouldn’t call them on anything.

What’s the point of calling anybody on anything? Where’s the fun in that!? Unless of course you’ve got nothing better to do but spend three days spitting arguments at each other… them by all means.

    p.s. Why did it say posted at *** by Ack? I know I wasn’t hallucinating… I think…
