Duchess Says – Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs

Duchess Says Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs
Noise rock is one of the more interesting genres out there right now, but because it boils down to just noise for a lot of it sound very similar. Noise is based very heavily based on the live performance, and thus the recorded version can sometimes be a little dull. However there are still noise bands out there who know how to make themselves stand out from the crowd in their studio albums, and Duchess Says is one of them.

Duchess Says hail from Montreal, and Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs is their first full-length studio album. They are great to combine strong elements of dance-punk into the mix of noise in order to make it stand out from other noise bands. Every song is driven really hard much like some older punk like Black Flag or Minor Threat, yet at the same time still has the elements of noise, putting them on par with other noise acts like AidsWolf.

The really impressive thing is the vocals, although often just extremely lo-fi screaming there is often some really cool things their singer does with her voice. For example matching her screams with the noises being made by the guitar In Tenne Non Neu. She is like a female Mike Patton in a lot of ways, taking screaming to a new level, making it interesting instead of just wrecking her vocal chords.

I had the good fortune of seeing these guys live at El Mocambo a while ago, and they also put on one of the best live shows I’ve seen in a while. I have never seen a band have more control of the audience, with the singer literally running into the crowd and moving people if she didn’t seem to like where you were standing. The amount of energy they had on stage was almost overwhelming and everyone in the crowd was quickly won over by the end of the show. Check them out if you get the chance and defiantly pick up Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs, even if your not a fan of noise it may surprise you.
