Winter Gloves – About a Girl Review

Winter Gloves About a Girl Review

For their first studio album, Winter Gloves have made quite a statement about their musical style. The group originated from a solo project by-now lead singer Charles F. in Montreal. Since then the group has grown to include three new members. About a Girl sounds like it’s stepped into the Canadian music waters with both feet first. The record borrows from various musical genres to coalesce into something different. From glockenspiel inspired shoegazer rhythms to Beach Boys style vocals it all sounds familiar to the ear but in no way should About a Girl be mistaken with great classics of the past. Their debut EP Let Me Drive received good airplay and attention in Canada. The group aims to continue in its newfound success with the fall 2008 release of About a Girl.

The album is full of upbeat dance tracks that include catchy lyrics. The sound is dominated by synthesizers and trebling bass but they don’t overshadow other instruments, or, most of all the lyrics. The first single ‘About a Girl’ represents the entire composition. What you get is an inviting take towards electronica. The album’s middle tracks lack the same depth as its former and latter parts but it’s not enough to sour the experience. One of the great highlights of the record is the closing song ‘Piano 4 Hands’. The antipodal take from the album includes a very subdued sound made for easy listening. The lyrics describe the story of a lost love and the song enhances the feeling of the moment.

It’s easy to appreciate the subtleties of Winter Gloves. There’s a lot to love here and with good reason. Whether you’re skipping to the beat of ‘Invisible’ or tuning with intent to ‘The Way To Celebrate’, the band shows its worth with variety and attention to detail. They’re currently on tour with Thunderheist and are making inroads with circulation in the United States. The group withholds the high standards of the genre they represent and, with About a Girl; they have done quite a number to show listeners their musical potential.
