A Funk and Glam Mix Bag

One of the perks of writing for a music blog is new music comes to you. I don’t always like what I hear, and it’s hard to write bad reviews, but I decided to start compiling favourable tracks from various groups. So this week, here is a quick mix of what came into my box and what I’m looking forward to hearing more from.

FRITZ HELDER & THE PHANTOMS

Fritz Helder and The Phantoms
is a group I’ve been seeing around Toronto for a while. They performed last year at Pride. I stumbled on them by accident, they were on before the Dragonettes. Their live performance was full of energy. I’ve heard they used to be Nelly Furtado’s back-up dancers, and have even recently signed on to her label Nelstar Music. The group’s album Greatest Hits: Platinum Edition will be out on July 7th. This group is a total glam pop funk mix with fabulous charisma.

I like their track Making A Scene on their MySpace.

TWIGGY FROSTBITE

Twiggy Frostbite, from Sweden, is not so much a Funk or a Glam group, it’s more experimental pop (think Dido meets Bjork). I’m assuming the name derives from their cold waify look? Anyway, I wasn’t sure I would actually like the music I heard, but I do. It’s very ethereal, melodic and quiet; a nice way to finish a glam day when you’re stripping off your gear. The video (below) of Heroes reminds of Anime, when the hero/heroine goes on a journey.

I like the Grime Star track on their MySpace.

FREAKATONIC

Germany’s FREAKATRONIC is supposedly producing music from the 22nd Century. Yes, the music is in German, and I have no idea what the heck they’re saying, but then again that has never stopped me from liking something. Freakatronic recently released a new album called “Carneval auf der Kouch” with the single The Sound of Freakatronic. The track is very Daft-Punk meets 90s dance beat. Of the tracks they have on their MySpace, the free download The Sound of Freakatronic (below) is not my favourite. The tracks all have this very Euro feel to it, which is personally a bit of a turn off. They remind of the Tokyo CyberMonster Toronto event I attended last August, maybe I should arrange a hook up? Or maybe they already know each other?

I did enjoy some of the quieter electronic tracks like Hotel Shanghai and Bonsoir on their MySpace.
