Modernage – Sirhan Sirhan Review
Modernage, the Miami based rock quintet have released their third EP album in September 2008 entitled Sirhan Sirhan. Its five songs delve into the ideas of sense of self, personality and love. With evident musical influences such as Joy Division and Gang of Four, the band is still carving out a niche for itself. The result is an experimental style that is never uniform throughout, and changes from track to track. For the most part their experimentation has yielded good results and what exudes is a strong compilation.
The album begins with dynamic drum lines in ‘The Victim’ and ‘Somewhere’. Somewhere has a more pop rock feel to its rhythm, as opposed to The Victim which makes good use of the synths but tends to drag on beyond the four minute mark. The truly standout tracks of the EP were the final two, ‘7 9 12’ and ‘Sirhan Sirhan’. The former is a venture at an electronica dance track, with the latter demonstrating the Joy Division influences on the band. The guitar riffs sound very reminiscent Joy Division’s 24 Hours and even Shadowplay.
Overall the album was impressive. It’s a solid effort and each of the five songs is unique to themselves. The vocals didn’t take to me personally because of the higher pitch they tended to reach. It felt like a juxtaposition to the rhythm but that is more a question of personal taste to which can easily be disregarded. Sirhan Sirhan is worth a listen.
