Slow Down, Molasses – I’m An Old Believer Review

Slow Down, Molasses Im An Old Believer Review
Slow Down, Molasses, a quartet out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan won me over with their song, I’m An Old Believer. In a way it defied their band name, as it wasn’t slow and showed off pop sensibility that always seems to get my attention. Like molasses though, they sure come off as sweet, perhaps like sugary folk instead of sugary pop.

I was actually surprised that this band consisted of so many members. At first I thought it was just a minimal amount – I guess I wasn’t paying to attention to a song like “Fuckin’ Up” which is epic. In a sense they are playing a style of baroque pop mixed with elements of country and indie pop. I prefer to call it alt country, a “hint” of country but really unique much like Okkervil River.

The funny thing is that it takes a little while to warm to, when you finally realize that this band from Saskatoon is really a great thing. Like molasses they just seep into your heart slowly but surely.

The album, I’m An Old Believer is still very raw. However, they are an upcoming band with all the tools to succeed. They can go a variety of directions and I fully expect the band to become stronger and stronger (and more popular). Some weaknesses do include being at times lackadaisical. With slowed vocals and the occasionally strong music isn’t there to support it. At times I just hear one instrument playing the same tune with some laid back singing which why I kept forgetting that it was 8 members, not two or three.

Still, those flaws make Slow Down, Molasses album a decent album though it’s clear they can make something great and I certainly expect one as they keep recording.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5
The writing is great, and instrumentation superb. A good start to get rolling..

Check out these tracks (I really really like them, as the score would not indicate):

This band is great. I’d score it even higher than 3.5….. in fact, we did. :)

Hehe, I was reading your review while I was writing this up. Forgot to link it: was going to say how you guys always review every Canadian band it seems.

herohill… covering all the bands no one else cares about ;)

Did you go see SD, M when they played in TO?

    Ugh. When did they come?

I generally can’t get out much since I live in the suburbs. As much as my “area” is known for where artists grow up, there is no art in this part of town.
