The Woodlands – The Woodlands Review
On a cloudy day in Toronto, I’m glad I got hold of this following new music. The Woodlands had emailed us and I believe that chance plays a big part in allowing me to stumble on it today. AW Readers, today is a solemn day and with a book curled up on a comfy couch, The Woodlands is perfect music to fit the mood.
The Woodlands is a husband (Samuel) and wife (Hannah) band from Portland, Oregon. Their newly self-released and self-titled album was entirely produced and written in their apartment. The album possesses an intimate quality often not found in major productions. Some may compare Hannah’s voice to Feist, but I say her voice is more pure, innocent, not as raw and sensual as Feist (love her voice, don’t get me wrong). Her voice very much reminds of Bic Runga, the New Zealander.
The album begins with Until The Day Dims, a long acoustic intro and the introduction to Hannah’s voice, soft and delicate. King And Queen’s melody possesses a haunting chorus and tune for a slow dance of parting lovers. I would say this is one of my favourite tracks of the album, along with Summerland. Summerland is for bring summer days of young love, the sickly sweet tunes of the xylophone. I also like the Asleep In September track, another slow paced quiet acoustic track. The entire album is an intimate look at soft tunes, haunting vocals and sincere musings.
This is a very good start of a promising band that should keeps taking us into their haunting reflections of love and life.
