The New Cities – Lost In City Lights

The New Cities Lost In City Lights
Already on the path for major commercial stardom, The New Cities intrigues both pop-punk enthusiasts and radio trend setters. With a style that’s a mash up of electronic, pop and rock, their sound is as ridiculous as it is addicting. Their single Dead End Countdown, has already experienced major radio play, and is a hit amongst all brands and stations. Lost In City Lights is a fantastic album for what it is, down to earth music meant for bobbing heads, not swaying opinions.

The New Cities are comparable to a hybrid of Metro Station and Forever The Sickest Kids. They boast incredibly fun synths and have the personality of a great powerpop band. They lack none of the charisma and are very likeable guys from Quebec Canada. Perhaps the first Canadian powerpop band of this calibre, their nationality only adds to the coolness factor. They have toured with some big names including IllScarlett, Metric and Ten Second Epic.

So what makes these guys ready for the mainstream success? Most importantly they are built specifically for the general public, with a sound that’s disturbingly catchy. Their first track is titled Hypertronic Superstar, which is pretty much self explanatory. They have clever and funny lines and chorus’, pretty much singing about whatever original theme they can think up. In a way, they are hypertronic superstars in their own right. The chorus has a great melody and very fun lyrics to accompany the beat. From the well placed backup vocals to the perfectly timed synths, everything works like a smooth running engine.

Dead End Countdown is the hit of the hour, and not much needs to be said about it. If you even remotely listen to the radio, you’ll have been entranced by its emphatic melody and catchy words. There is a heavy pop influence in this track, comparable to a boy band with heavier beats, nonetheless it’s a great example of their dance themed album. The track doesn’t really emit a certain emotion which might be its one defining fault, but in the end it is what it is.

That isn’t to say they don’t have some meaningful songs in this album. Take It Back/Cheat Again has a very upbeat and warm chorus. Despite the very action packed melody, the lyrics are simple and hopeful for listeners. Leaders of The Mislead is more of a downbeat track, and has a sad undertone. The tracks range in all kinds og overall moods and themes but despite all the emotions conveyed through the words, the songs are generally all dance-worthy, exciting and catchy.

The New Cities are an exciting band, with a great style. While they have the kind of sound that may not last long in the industry, they will for sure see much success in the coming years. Despite the inability for listeners to gain any emotional attachment to the band, they will find themselves to be thoroughly entertained as I was. The music is entrancing and down right fun. The album has hit after hit of memorable lines and upbeat melodies. A great album put out by none other than a Canadian band.
