Kong – Snake Magnet Review
Punk laced heavy metal just collided with the eerie antics of the Insane Clown Posse. This brought to you by Kong’s upcoming debut studio album ‘Snake Magnet’. The Manchester based trio is aiming to set the bar high with this release after receiving good exposure from BBC 1 and Channel M. Clearly the album does not lack ambition. But sometimes the faster you go, the harder it is to stop. With a melodic style that may be difficult to settle in, Snake Magnet sets itself apart in a unique fashion, but in doing so may isolate listeners.
The ten track compilation opens with three songs that have aggressive guitar riffs paired with roaming bass. The melody transitions really deviate from the traditional peaks and valleys of a song but they’re done in an inventive and emphatic manor. After this point the record changed pace to portray a more screamo sound in songs like “The Stench Of Internal Fire”, “What’s Your Name Called?” and “Sport”. The vocals on these tracks felt reminiscent of Atreyu and moved away from the gritty metal introduction. The final track “K(l)ong” clocks in at 8:20, and it feels like a repetitious guitar solo to a song that doesn’t begin until the 5:23 mark. It made me feel very impatient listening to it.
Despite the obvious flaws, Snake Magnet has enough meat to make it favourable. The experimentation is fresh and welcomed especially in the crowded metal/punk genre. The only problem here is the constant emphasis on experimentation. This misdirection is done to make the esoteric sound that will satisfy a niche crowd but may turn off many more.
