Discovery – Orange Shirt MP3 Review

Discovery Orange Shirt MP3 Review
Discovery is the side project of both Vampire Weekend’s Rostam “Batman”glij and Ra Ra Riot’s lead singer Wes Miles to create a duo unlike either of their main bands. They call themselves an R&B outfit using more electro synth pop to give off a dance/club feel that is VERY UNLIKE their own bands.

Vampire Weekend on one hand is a pop band with some classical influences and some African intertwined, but Batmanglij’s work as a keyboardist – it doesn’t seem to be that big of stretch. Bring in Wes Miles, on The Rhumb Line an album I loved due to the classical influences and deep emotion/celebratory in a band member’s death, Wes Miles vocals were usually cited as a weak point. Well, you can put that to rest because in Discovery, Miles reinvents his vocal style and shows off that he is much more talented than what he had led on and was probably held back a little by the classical and deep emotional style of Ra Ra Riot (not to say that his vocals suited the music well).

On Orange Skirt it’s a major departure to hear him singing over big beats and crooning “I’ll promise to leave before your mother wakes up in the morning”. While the lyric reads out awfully, Batmanglij and Miles prove that they have the perfect chemistry and execute what seemingly could be a mediocre song brilliantly.

Of the songs I’ve heard by Discovery, I wouldn’t say Orange Shirt is my favourite but that’s because I’m digging their tracks so much. Definitely worth checking out if you are into dance/club/pop (check out their homepage for streams to more songs). Otherwise I could see why some people wouldn’t like this.

P.S. Doesn’t Rostam look like he’s 12 in the photo? Whereas Wes looks more like Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The odd couple ;) .
