Magic Wands – Magic Love and Dreams EP Review

Magic Wands is a travelling duo, most recently out of Los Angeles (formed in Nashville). The duo comprises of Chris and Dexy having the band create a pop duo armed with a drum machine with Dexy leading with vocals.
Before I begin discussing, Magic, Love and Dreams; for whatever reason this EP has given me a writer’s block. I deleted my first proposed post as it sounded lame. This post could very well end up being lame as well but at least I’m giving you the heads up.
I think part of the reason this little 4-song EP gives me trouble is that I like it but I don’t really have much to say. Magic Wands’ music is quite enjoyable but perhaps with a duo backed by a drum machine you probably can expect the typical pop music I tend to like (perhaps a little too much).
On Black Magic and Kiss Me Dead are songs that are both danceable and catchy (perhaps a little bit too catchy). My favourite track probably has to be Kiss Me Dead with the slow guitar riff, Dexy for a moment sounds amazing singing the chorus (2:10). A good pop song but at times I even feel like, it could be much better as it doesn’t really have a climax. Speaking of climaxes, Magic Wands certainly aren’t afraid of speaking about having sex especially on the spoken word portions of Teenage Love.
At times I’m not sure where Magic, Love and Dreams rates. It’s very enjoyable on a pop level but at times I wish there was more. It certainly isn’t creative or innovative and while the music is good, it never becomes great. However, I must admit that I’ve listened to the EP quite a ton and it’s true that it hasn’t gotten boring. Even when I think it should be, that counts for something – perhaps a slight guilty pleasure.
Rating: 3.25 out of 5.
A good solid EP. However, I’m still not sure I’d like future material by them. Can they hold my attention for a full length? This EP shows off some good skills but I guess we’ll see if they become a band I forget about in a few months.
