The Lovely Feathers – Fantasy Of The Lot Review

The Lovely Feathers Fantasy Of The Lot Review
The Lovely Feathers is a band out of Montreal who released Fantasy Of The Lot in June, their 3rd LP. Obviously, I have no history to go back on as a referencing tool so here goes: The Lovely Feathers play high paced pop using keyboard synths and high energy from their lead singer Mark Kupfert. The music they play is great, enjoyable, and unique pop.

I don’t like starting with negative things to say but it’s eating at me. Before, while listening to this album – I would have said “it sounds like they are from Montreal – at least the lead singer”. I meant that I didn’t think the vocalist’s English was very good (crosses fingers in hope that I didn’t make a mistake while saying that) but I figure it might not be in the case. However case in point, on the second track, “Long Walks” Mark Kupfert slyly sings “When we go on long walks, we go on very long Walks. That line is absolutely atrocious.

However the music itself isn’t that bad. While I try to ignore that line specifically, Kupfert does a great job of singing it and his band members more then make up for it. It’s sometimes painfully obvious that the Lovely Feathers aren’t great lyricists and it’s their only weakness. They’d have it all if their music was geared to more intelligible fan base. Perhaps the band is being humorous or sarcastic in it’s simplicity the fact that it has me wondering is a downfall.

I’d like to emphasize that the music is great and the vocals are pretty good. I’d compare them to Suckers but perhaps on much more crack. It just feels like The Lovely Feathers know how to make good music despite the message. They could very well sing “We’re smashing babies heads in and we love it” and it’d make you dance along or at the very least present it in a way that it’d would be stuck in your head the next days.

Choosing between the two is tough, at times the musicianship makes the poor lyricism irrelevant. Most pop songs are usually structured this way, catchiness over substance and to a certain extent it’s acceptable. I still like their music, though I find clear examples of music I’d like more. I almost refuse to listen to the track “Long Walks” so I’m hardly enjoying it. Luckily for the rest of the album, it’s highly enjoyable pop that works in a multitude of ways.
