In Cadeo – Making Our Graves Review

In Cadeo Making Our Graves Review

Following the release of their self-titled debut EP last year, In Cadeo is ringing up 2009 with the full length album “Making Our Graves” due to release this August. The group takes an ambitious step forward trying different musical essences and styles, a step that mostly lands on solid footing. Making Our Graves yields extremes from both perspectives. Some tracks may sound generic, while others will sound monumental. Overall the compilation will feel rough around the edges at first, but if you stick with it it’s an enjoyable experience.

Shunning the genre of pure rock, In Cadeo begins the album with a track of build up. “Lions” is a relaxed accumulation about a time of exploration expressed by lead singer Jared Scott. This song comes up short however because the traditional wide range baritone vibrato vocals sound atypical with the modern rhythmic sections that the song has. This theme can be heard reoccurring more often through the latter tracks of the album, but luckily it’s not universal throughout. Harmoniously the vocals sound top notch. The added layers of support pitch the sound to blend with the melody. For this reason the stand out track on Making Our Graves was “Communist Lecture”. The sound really gains positive momentum through the five minute measure because of the contrasting high/lows and the parallel mediums. More examples of this can be seen in other tracks as well like “City Lights”, and “West” and they’re easily the most appreciative aspects of this record. Beyond vocals the melody is consistent with open bass lines and short and quick percussion. In Cadeo uses a variety of other instruments like the piano in “Congregation” and synths in “Lions” but they’re not easily recognizable.

For the most part, however, this is a catchy, smooth record with musical elements from the 80s and 90s. The band is broadening its musical reach with Making Our Graves but it doesn’t sound as bold as their debut EP did. This is by no means indicative of the quality because it there’s evidence of polish and quality here, yet, the final product leaves me thinking that there was something left out.
