Free Hip Hop mixtapes that are actually good
Who loves free music? Well, anyone I would imagine – So this Tuesday I bring to you a kind of Hip Hop Christmas in July. Over the past week, scattered throughout this digital landscape we call the internet, I’ve been able to find an abundance of free mixtapes, compilations and EP releases that are all available for free download…. Here is a short list of some of the best.

Atmosphere – Leak At Will (download here)
This seven song EP is a special treat from Slug and Ant as they embark on the launch of the their new digital online store at fifthelementonline.com, brought with a little bit of the classic Atmosphere feel they are much known for. As stated on the Rhymesayers website, this free EP is “nothing too serious, just smiles and cries” and a solid seven songs as far as I’m concerned.
Prof and St. Paul Slim – Recession Music (download here)
A truly golden find. Stophouse and executive producer Ant (from Atmosphere) bring you a true testament to why the Midwest hip hop scene is by far the best. Prof and St. Paul Slim deliver an album that is so good it’s well worth paying for, but no need. Enjoy this masterpiece for free.
Strange Famous Records megamix 2009 (download here)
A 52 minute mix compiled by DJ Pickster One and comprised of 20 tracks from the Strange Famous Records 2009 release schedule. Music from artists such as Cecil Otter, Sleep, The Returners (2mex’s new group), B Dolan, Prayers for Atheists and Curtis Plum.

Sage Francis – Sick of Wasting.. (download here)
Also from Strange Famous Records is a new album from label front man Sage Francis. This is the fifth in the “Sick Of” mixtape series, and this one’s free for digital download. This mixtape is a collection of tracks spanning the years 1996-2009 and is just another addition to the growing list of talent displayed by Sage Francis.
Midwest Broadcast Presents Flyover Land Vol. 1 (download here)
This compilation hosts some of the freshest hip hop emcees and producers coming out of the Midwest and put together in a mixtape by the blog Midwest Broadcast. When the message went out looking for artist contribution on this album the response was so good that they had to branch it out into multiple volumes, so keep an eye open for Flyover Land Vol. 2 which is set to come out in a couple of months.

This is actually from 2007, but at this point in time it seems to have creeped back into the spotlight. This mixtape features Rhymefest on tracks sampled from Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson songs and was put together by DJ/Producer Mark Ronson. It’s packed with featured artists such as Talib Kweli, Ghostface Killah, Dres, Wale, Camp Lo and Mary J. Blige.
