Coeur De Pirate – Self Titled Review

Coeur De Pirate Self Titled Review

Coeur de Pirate aka Beatrice Martin is a pop singer out of Quebec who has quite a large fanbase it seems. We haven’t covered many Francophone artists and I tend to quite like a few. I guess I’m afraid to write weak reviews, my French sucks so I already have a barrier to overcome with the music. I guess it’s like any other world music, just take it for what it is.

Anyway Coeur de Pirate at the young age of 20 and filled with tons of tattoos uses her piano and her stunning voice to produce a very beautiful pop album. I have a hard time come up with words but it makes me feel like I should’ve tried in grade 9 French classes but alas like Khmer – I wasn’t much for learning a second language.

Musically, it’s simple so while it doesn’t personally wow me – it’s pretty good and it doesn’t taken away from Martin’s vocals. I like the piano work but again I lack real musical knowledge so let’s not pretend like I know any better. On “Intermission” she proves that she could do without her vocals and is just ultimately a wunderkind with loads of talent oozing on this record.

It’s hard for me to have a “deeper” musical experience with the music being that it’s French but let’s not make her sing in English even for it’s greener pastures. The French language is beautiful and Coeur de Pirate represents that incredibly well.

Rating: 4 out of 5
As for the rating, I can’t call it great or a masterpiece just really good. It’s also a score you take with a grain of salt as I can’t decipher any of the lyrical content which is kind of important when reviewing a singer song writer. Still from what I can hear, it’s good stuff.
Apologies for the substandard review.
