Jet – Shaka Rock Album Review

“We feel the way we wanna feel.”

Jet Shaka Rock Album Review

Today we’re going to discuss lack of disappointment. Exhibit A will be Jet.

Sometimes I get the British vibe from this band versus their actual Australian heritage. But that’s not the point. You don’t have to be a Jet fan to know Jet. “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” introduces us to Jet’s first album, Get Born, in 2003. I wonder who in their right mind in this generation does not know of that song. Shine On follows, a presentable album, although quite personally not my favorite. And then here we arrive, at Shaka Rock, Jet’s third album, and I could contemplate saying it be Get Born status worthy, if not higher.

The first single, “Killed In Action” combines Jet’s own sound with a touch of the sounds like there of the Living Things. Throughout the album the guitar remains heavy and within Jet’s comfort zone, yet with a touch of something upbeat I can’t quite label as pop. These sounds are something like of the Hoosiers, such as in the song Seventeen. “La Di Da” couldn’t be anymore catchy, a song that definitely caught my attention the first time I heard. The next two songs slow it down a bit, “Goodbye Hollywood” reminding me of a touch of Oasis, “Walk” something I could swore I’ve heard before.

In the last leg of the album we have four more songs, one being my personal favorite, “Times Like This.” The background instrumental stays consistent the first part of the song, nothing interesting, yet the vocals and the melody carry the song into something foot tapping and head moving. Maybe I was quick to judge, but the two second to last songs other than that did not finish the album strong. The slow “She Holds A Grudge” however is quite mellow enough to wrap up the album as the last song. But I am just a Nazi for album endings better than the beginnings.

Shaka Rock Shaka Rock Shaka Rock… Maybe it’s the aftermath of listening to the Arctic Monkeys’ new album that makes this release enjoyable because it did not make me want to listen to an older album of theirs, just the new one over again. Maybe it’s the inner creativeness of Jet still there that keeps me listening. You decide for yourself.
