Pursuit of Happiness- Kid Cudi ft. MGMT and Ratatat

Pursuit of Happiness Kid Cudi ft. MGMT and Ratatat

I have been a huge Kid Cudi fan since I first heard Day and Night (ed. note isn’t it Nite?) last year, I had the pleasure of meeting with him last August when he performed at Wrongbar. Not only was his set amazing, he is also an amazing guy, he was buying people drinks and was more than willing to talk with everyone at the bar. So when new music of his comes out I get excited, and I must say that his past few songs that have surfaced I have been the biggest fan of. Thankfully Pursuit of Happiness came out, because I was starting to get worried that he would become one of those artists who only get featured on good songs, but never have one of their own.

Produced by one of my favourite Dj Duos, Ratatat, with MGMT lending their vocals, Cudi’s slow cool sound reminiscent of my favourite Man on the Moon from his mixtape, is back. The beat is cool and relaxed and you can definitely tell Ratatat was behind the production, my favourite thing though is that Cudi actually has a good signing voice, and that’s what really separates him for me from other rappers. His chorus isn’t just some words thrown together, it sounds more complex, while some may argue he isn’t rapper I really don’t care. MGMT just adds to a great song, there vocals definitely make it more interesting, but if they weren’t there the song would still be amazing.

Well Cudi, looks like your prayer has come true, the last thing you will be remembered for wont be some apple bottom jeans with the boots with the fur.

5/5

I don’t know about you but I really was expecting more from his album. His mixtapes were so refreshing and he had that refreshing intellectual style of rapping but it seemed to really get dumbed down for the album. Just my two-cents.

Still, (especially when you compare it to all the other trash in the genre being released today) this is a great album.
