Yeasayer – Odd Blood Album Review

I’m gonna keep this one short & (bitter) sweet:

Those that loved All Hour Cymbals are (really) going to hate Odd Blood.

Best track – “Ambling Alp”
Worst track – Everything but “Ambling Alp”
Overall rating – “F” for Fail

I wish you would have explained your reasons for giving it an F!

LOL I think the next few comments will probably suggest this.

Well – perhaps you’ve heard of the saying: an image speaks louder than words?

haha – that’s not a cop-out by the way – it’s humour. If you want a detailed opinion – here it is: I’m sure some people will love Odd Blood – but Yeasayer’s latest album is so far off from where they started (All Hour Cymbals) – that it’s my belief they will lose most of their initial fan base. Why is that? Well it’s for the same reason mom’s bought the latest Kings of Leon & why I didn’t… MONEY.

Money talks – but it doesn’t equate to good music – or good taste. So if you don’t mind – I’d rather make light of a horrible situation & reserve my right not to tear into Odd Blood out of respect for an old (used to be) favourite.

Please don’t mistake the above post as cruel and unusual… Listening to this album broke my heart – I used to love this band – and I sincerely hope they hear my little cry of despair & release something more suitable in the future.

Thanks for your comment – keep em coming! Feel free to check out my myspace to see what other bands I’m listening to at the moment – http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=518544171

More suitable? to your tastes? Basing a review on any said band’s previous album(s) is bush league.

the fact they altered their sound and perhaps their style renders this album inadequate?

Call the whambulance because my band “sold out” and wants to actually make a living.

you should write for rolling stone.

    …kings of leon? really? LOL

    Dear Mrs. Sean,

Thank you from the bottom of my heart – your witty below-the-belt stabs have really opened my eyes. If it’s all right with you – I’d like to retract my previous blogicism & give Odd Blood a second, & perhaps fairer, review.

Taken as a whole – Odd Blood isn’t as accomplished as All Hour Cymbals – but it does have some strong points. For example: upbeat track – Mondegreen, would make the perfect addition to your weekly aerobic class playlist. Someone with such discerning taste – would almost certainly enjoy an afternoon dog walk in the park listening to Love Me Girl . I especially love the loon clip they throw in – the layering of animal calls over catchy pop tunes (think Timberlake) certainly ads an interesting element to this seizure-inducing track. And my personal favourite - Rome – will transform all those dreadful weekend drives to Wall Mart into fun-filled pop adventures. With Odd Blood on permanent rotation – you’ll be cruising in style. Rock on mom… rock on.

Yeasayer’s first album is called All Hour Cymbals.

I’d just like to say i really like this album. It reminded me of the first music i ever became interested in such as that of genesis and paul simon… “Electro” seems to be the way a lot of artists are going and i think these guys have done it best with this album. Compared to their last album it is vastly different, yes, however i dont understand why people HAVE to hate pop music. And when i say pop music i dont mean commercially successful pop music…i’ll never hear this song on a commercial station in my city… but i can understand why you are upset manning.

To me it sounds like a 5th grader could have written these songs. The lyrical content is embarrassing as is musicianship (nice rock band guitar Wolf). I find very few moments of real emotion on this record. Yeasayer is no longer a stone that gathers no moss; they stopped rolling when they released Odd Blood and now they sit and gather super shiny rhinestones and crystal anal bead microphones. Great albums are few and far between.
