The National- High Violet Album Review
The National unlike many bands to me speak like they are a working class band. Not saying that they sing about mining coal or anything just they have a very common man sound to them, which isn’t a bad thing its actually one of the things I find most appealing about them. Their latest album High Violet is similar to their old work just a bit more mature.
It’s almost hard to explain this album without spouting off cliche lines about the struggles of daily life or self destructive behavior but I am going to try. The National to me have always spoken from a different place than a lot of other bands, not that other bands don’t try, the national just seems to understand how to balance emotion and substance without it getting too preachy or annoying. My favourite on the album is their ode to parenthood Afraid of Everyone, which just makes me want to have kids even less. Yah the normal shitty diapers and constant crying always put me off but this track made me think about how scary it would be to have a child depend on you for everything. Aside from not wanting to have children this track is one that you can’t help but sing along to, the guitar rift is out of this world and just in general an amazing song.
High Violet is one of the standout records this year, I will be really surprised if it doesn’t top or at least get a notable mention in pretty much every best of the year lists. If you haven’t heard the album yet, buy it and give your self an hour to do nothing but appreciate how amazing the national really are.
