I think it comes down to style, Beach House a dream pop band from Baltimore stick to a consistent yet wonderful style featuring Victoria Legrand’s deep yet strong vocals and strong instrumentation between a two person band. It’s very low key and if you haven’t heard of Beach House or you’re into mellow or “background” music, Beach House is definitely high on the recommendation list.

Beach House’s Teen Dream starts with a power house track “Zebra”. This opener is the reason pictures have a thousand words. In my mind while Legrand sings “Any way you run, you run before us black and white horse, arching among us” I just picture a zebra running through the wind with its hair blowing back. The song is so simple yet so effective and I do feel like I’m actually dreaming. In any case it’s not that pictures are worth a thousand words it’s that Beach House can make it priceless.

The album is similar stylistically to Devotion and like their last album it’s taken some time for me to really get past the surface of each song. If you notice (I doubt it) I haven’t written much and I’ve had extensive time with this album and I still don’t have my true feelings down. I can’t after both albums proclaim any album to be “the greatest EVAR!” but alas I can’t stop listening.

Maybe it’s just Victoria Legrand’s hypnotizing voice, maybe it’s jus that Beach House is damn good and I can’t explain it more then the typical “beautiful and lush music” to label them on. Either way you get the point.

I think it’s a pretty good album. I don’t know what I’ll think 1 year from now or 2 years from now but if it’s anything like Devotion then any score less then perfect is wrong.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 – for now.
