William Fitzsimmons at The Horseshoe Tavern (03/23/11)
So last Wednesday night, I had the pleasure of meeting, sitting-in on an interview and watching William Fitzsimmons perform. William Fitzsimmons’ fourth full-length album, Gold In The Shadow, was released on March 22nd. His first date of his Gold In The Shadow tour was in Toronto on March 23rd. My friend, Zal, introduced me to William Fitzsimmons’ music a couple of months back but I didn’t have a chance to listen to any of his music until I was assigned to cover the show.
William Fitzsimmons is one amazing human being — equal parts singer, songwriter and psychotherapist — his music is a mix between acoustic, folk/folk rock with elements of electronica. Cracking jokes as he tuned his guitar in between songs, he let everyone in the audience know that he is grateful to be able to be a musician and have people actually connect with his music. Playing a great selection of songs from all his full-length albums, his set list included: ‘Beautiful Girl’, ‘The Tide Pulls From The Moon’, ‘If You Would Come Back Home’, ‘Bird of Winter Prey’, ‘Blood and Bones’, ‘Tied To Me’, ‘Goodmorning’ and ‘Passion Play’. When it came time for the encore, William Fitzsimmons and his band played excerpts from ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, ‘Free Bird’ and Ashley Simpson’s ‘Pieces of Me’. He and his band finished off the show in the center of the crowd, performing ‘The Winter From Her Leaving’ as their last song of the evening.
All in all, this was one of the best shows I’ve been to in a LONG time. As I said earlier, I got to sit in on an interview with William Fitzsimmons. The interview was conducted by my friend, Zal, so remember to check back later this week for AWmusic’s interview with William Fitzsimmons!
