Star Slinger @ The Horseshoe
I approached the darkly lit back area stage just minutes into Shigeto‘s performance. I was intrigued…mostly by a girl, (her name was Olivia) as she wriggled her body to each tune… drink in hand. You’d think she was part of the act the way people ogled as she would drop and carelessly sway.
It wasn’t until L.A bred Shlohmo hit the stage that the venues capacity started to fill. “Excuse me, I’m really tired,” he quipped. Immediately after he dropped his first beat though the crowd had a sense of ease; everyone, including Shlohmo, let go of their inhibitions and bopped as the bass got heavier and heavier- (there was a lot of dancing). Shlohmo enlivened the audience dropping remixed versions of Gucci Mane, Aaliyah and Soulja Boy. (Boy can cook!)
The anticipation for Star Slinger was palpable after 2 impeccable openers. He ran onstage professing, “I love you Toronto, you’re so much better than Montreal,” as the crowd roared, just then dropping Dumbin’. Watching all 3 DJ’s was a feast; they kept giving everything they had and every audience member just gobbled it all up. It felt like a party, especially when half the crowd made their way onto the stage. I went into this show without any expectations and was absolutely blown away.
