Fiona’s CMF 2012 picks: Wednesday March 21, 2012

It’s that time of year again – Canadian Music Week 2012 – the concert series held in Toronto to hold music lovers over until NXNE. At this year’s Canadian Music Fest there are about 1,013 acts and 300 individual shows. So without further ado, here are my picks for this year’s festivities…starting off with WEDNESDAY MARCH 21st.

2K12 Korea Night: K-Pop Wave at Kool Haus. Doors at 7PM.

This year is going to be HUGE for K-Pop! 2012 has just started and K-Pop is making a huge splash over here in North America. Big Bang were recently recognized by TIME magazine on two separate occasions as a band to watch out for. (Article 1: South Korea’s Greatest Export: How K-Pop’s Rocking the World; Article 2: Watch Your Back, Bieber: The Boy Band Is Making a Comeback) In addition, Big Bang’s Alive EP, released Feb 28, 2012, debuted at #150 on the United States Billboard 200 with no North American promotion whatsoever. Girls’ Generation, a nine-member South Korean pop girl group, made their American debut performing the English version of their lead single, The Boys, on “Live! with Kelly” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.” Last, but not least, I recently developed a life-encompassing crush on Washington-state born Korean pop idol, Jay Park. His first Korean studio album, New Breed, released on Feb 7, 2012, topped the charts both in Korea and Internationally claiming the #1 spot on the iTunes chart in USA, Australia and Canada. The album also took the number 4 spot on Billboard’s World Albums chart — this achievement was made despite no promotions being done in the States for the release. Earlier this month, Jay Park was also featured on Spin Magazine’s Pop Blog as their #1 crush. Although these artists aren’t going be at this K-Pop showcase, I would highly recommend people to check out this event just to get a sense of what’s to come. I will be there for G.NA and Brian Joo’s sets.

G.NA – I’ll Back Off So You Can Live Better (Feat. Young Joon Hyung from B2ST)
Brian Joo – Can’t Stop (feat. Jay Park and Dumbfoundead)

Casino at Neutral Lounge. 19+. Doors at 7:30PM.

I pretty excited to see this band perform. When it was announced on twitter this Montreal-based indie pop rockers, Casino, were participating in CMF, it was the first I ever heard of the band. I took look at some of their performance videos on Youtube and was immediately impressed by their stage presence and musicality. You can grab a free download of their album Sainte Rose from the band’s website.

Casino – Apple Shaped Heart

Young Empires at The Great Hall. Doors at 8PM.

This CMF showcase is by Union Events and Pirates Blend (Bedouin Soundclash‘s own record label). I’ve been waiting patiently to see Young Empires perform ever since I heard about their sold out record release show at the Horseshoe back in February. Their debut EP, Wake All My Youth, caught the attention of spiritual guru, Deepak Chopra and the band performed at The Chopra Foundation’s Sages and Scientists Symposium earlier this month.
