HTC One Phone Give Away Brought To You By Rogers

Hey Yall, Rogers Canada has been nice enough to give you lucky readers a chance to win an HTC One phone valued at $574.99.

Rogers is giving away this phone to celebrate the launch of Canada’s first Beats Audio enabled device. Rogers teamed up with HTC to create an interactive choose-your-own-adventure style video on YouTube. The general idea is that you’re mistaken as a big-wig LA music producer and asked into a music studio to mix a new track. You’re presented with a number of options and in the end you get to listen to the track and share the site with friends. Check it out here.

The HTC One X is now available from Rogers for $99 on a three-year FLEXtab term, read more about it here

All you have to do is name two albums from Alex’s and Fiona’s top albums of 2011 respectively. Those are some of our writers if you weren’t aware, its not that hard guys just google it. Send your answers to awmusic.contest@gmail.com

The first 100 people to answer correctly will then have their names put on a ballot. I will then pick one lucky winner and contact them for their mailing adress to get this sweet phone to them as soon as possible.

Good luck everyone!

Video of the Day – Daylight for Deadeyes – O, Canada

Mississauga, Ontario residents, Chris and Matt Gormley along with Andy Neill, are on to something. The video of their arrangement of Canada’s stodgy National Anthem, O, Canada, has become somewhat of a school sensation. Personally I would love to see us adopt this version. Can you imagine this being played at the Olympics when one of our athletes wins gold? It would show the world that we are still young and know how to have a good time. And, really, what country wouldn’t want to be known as a place to have a good time?

The song, written in response to the band being asked to play the original tedious version at random events, was their way of respectfully dragging the pompous old dirge into the 21st Century. It is much livelier and has a great rocky beat. Who knew that the old thing had such good bones that it could be reworked but still remain true to the spirit of the original? The song was played in schools around the Mississauga/Brampton area after Chris gave the track to his mother, who just happened to be the head secretary at a Brampton high school. It has now reached as far as British Columbia with an estimated 60 schools using it, at least part-time, during morning exercises.

The video itself has friends and fans of the band from all over the country holding up the Canadian Flag and waving. The drums you see Chris playing were originally owned by Johnny Fay of The Tragically Hip. Sean Browne from Yamaha Drums heard the bands version, liked it and offered the kit to Chris. He also offered the band a sponsorship deal and gave Chris a new set of red drums. Not bad, eh?

The band has three albums out and will be playing this song on Canada Day at the annual block party held on the street where they live in Meadowvale and you will be able to buy this version, as well as a bilingual version and all their albums, on iTunes. It would be nice to see this played at other Canada Day celebrations, too. Enjoy your long weekend and stay safe.

Purity Ring – Fineshrine

The latest from Canadian outfit Purity Ring who are set to release their first album Shrines July 24 through 4 AD/Last Gang. I’d heard mutterings of the duo last year, but it was the slow release of their singles which helped build an adoration and respect for their other-worldly electro-pop sound. Fineshrine is the pairs’ best work to date; it encapsulates that innocent-sensual vibe heard through much of their music with a certain refinement and composure, all while singer Megan James evokes her sentiments beautifully.

Purity Ring will also play with Dirty Projectors Friday, July 6 at The Danforth Music Hall.
