Video of the Day – Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros – ChildThere is a huge difference between childish and childlike – in one case you throw temper tantrums and in the other you see the joy in everything. Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros video for the new single off the ablum Here has a swe
et childlike innocence temporing the usually gloomy transition between living and dying.
In this video, directed by Michal Byra, a Polish fan who won a contest to direct any song he wanted off the album, we see an old man in the hospital, intravenous drip in his arm and a cynical nurse watching over him. As the video progresses, a young girl takes his hand and leads him out of the hospital and they have various adventures. At first the man is confused and looks around him like he doesn’t know where he is but then relaxes and throws himself into it, enjoying the freedom of splashing in a fountain and blowing bubbles. As the video winds down the old man is replaced by a young boy. The transition from a living being to a dead body is complete.
This is a rather joyous look at memories as we age and the way we look at death. I remember reading when Steve Jobs died that his final words were, “Wow! Wow! Wow!”. How much better is it to look at death, not as something to fear, but just another adventure.
