5th Projekt – Circadian Review

5th Projekt Circadian Review

5th Projekt best describe themselves as the pioneers of cinematic neo-classical romanticism, and although this seems like an impossible amalgamation of different musical genres, there does appear to be a definite cohesion in the music as the album plays through.

Released in 2006, Circadian was the debut release for the band. It’s impossible to place a singular label on it because it does not fit a conventional descriptive such as R&B, hip-hop, or alternative. This broad spectrum does not hinder its flow however, and only serves to fascinate the mind as you coast from the introduction of ‘In a Coma’ on the laurels of fast beat percussion, to the soft tame closure of ‘Resistance’.

The advance copy of Circadian is divided into four sections, each of which is named after one of the four seasons. This method signifies the changing tone through progression. However, it only feels like an incapable device that can be confusing. This takes away from the experience while listening throughout. Regardless of this, the album maintains consistent with dark fluidic guitar sequences in songs such as ‘Distraktid’ and ‘Spiders’. It can also deliver more upbeat melodic pieces in ‘Madness’ and ‘Broken Like This’. Both examples deliver a sound that is different yet the same, unified by lead singer Tara Rice’s strong voice.

This unification is Circadian’s biggest strength and weakness. The album tends to fall short as a result of its weaker tracks because they deviate from the comprehensive tone. In the center of it, The Tales of Don Quixote (dubbed ‘tToDQ’) does not set the stage appropriately for the second half of the album. At this point, it felt necessary to provide closure in order to properly start and finish the underlying story the album is trying to tell. Consequently, ‘One to Throw Away’ continues this deferral of momentum by extending the length of the song to an unnecessary eight and a half minutes.

5th Projekt definitely has a unique sound, one that can set moods and become memorable. It combines key aspects of recognizable music to bring that feeling of familiarity that stays in the mind. The group’s sound has evolved significantly from their early demos to today, and albeit promising, the album is not without its flaws. With time Circadian can sound unsatisfying due to the lack of complete substance. The weaker aspects of length and emotional connection affect it more then the average compilation because it delves into the experimental side of belief and spirituality. It is the definition of interactive music that requires the listener to make a connection in order to feel the experience. For that very same reason, people looking for a quick pick up and play may not enjoy it in the same way. It demonstrates a beginning to the bands career and although the sound may not be for all, those who catch what it gives may find it contagious.
