Beck’s Record Club gets help from fellow musicians

Recently announced at beck.com is the development of a new site with new features, the first being Record Club. Although album collaborations are nothing new, Beck and others have taken this idea and put a twist on it.
What this concept introduces is a collective of various musicians coming together to cover and record an entire album in one day; no rehearsal and no prior arrangements. The only pre planning will be the decision of the album to be re-worked. Each week one track will be uploaded to beck.com, but no word yet on if these will be for purchase, download or simply streaming.
It seems as though a lot of artists are getting involved in this project, the first round alone will be comprised of Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, Brian Lebarton, Bram Inscore, Yo, Giovanni Ribisi (yes, the actor), Chris Holmes, Thorunn Magnusdottir (from Iceland) and of course Beck. While, future sessions will also most likely include MGMT, Devendra Banhart and Jamie Lidell, among others.
After much discussion, the first album to be featured will be The Velvet Underground & Nico. There has yet to be any dates set and other than the album and artists involved the information given is pretty vague… Guess we’ll just have to see how this pans out in the coming months.

The Velvet Underground & Nico – Sunday Morning
Beck – Modern Guilt Review
I’m not sure if I’m a big fan of Beck (Hansen) but I’ve definitely enjoyed his work but the last album I checked out was Guero and I have a handful of Beck singles. I’m not pretending to be a knowledgeable Beck fan so bear with me.
Barring any expectations from the amount of blog hype the album has received.
The album starts with Orphans which has a cool beat but admittedly wanes as it goes along. The same can be said of Gamma Ray but the second track at least keeps up the pace.
To be honest, I don’t really like this album all too much. I do enjoy the song Replica.
Otherwise I find myself skipping each track waiting for something amazing. It stays on an even keel and remains consistent but I do not agree with the positive sentiments.
The music is not bad but nothing special in my opinion, it does have its moments and it’s not a failure by any means. I just have higher expectations of my music these days.
I understand why Modern Guilt, Replica and Soul of a Man is liked, some decent stuff on display but not enough to win me over. These days I seem to be tougher on music that is just okay. Nothing stands out and it’s mostly things that is filler.
