Brighter Brightest – Welcome Home EP

In the couple of years I have been writing for this site, I very rarely reviewed a Canadian band. And not once have I reviewed a band that was a legit contender in the genre that has quickly become the cornerstone surrounding my blogs. I’m a huge fan of the feel-good powerpop scene as you may already know, and I’m smitten over bands like The Maine and Forever The Sickest Kids. Brighter Brightest emulates a similar style, and this four-piece from Aurora (of all places) have really impressed me with their EP, Welcome Home. Consisting of five solid tracks, Welcome Home is the perfect beginning to the summertime festivities. The mellow style of play emits energy, warmth and toys with the feelings of nostalgia. Brighter Brightest has devilishly catchy hooks to accompany their sweet melodies, making them a promising band and not just because they’re Canadian.
Brighter Brightest has a very modest sound, never getting overly flashy with the vocals or instrumentals. Yet their tracks remain fitting to the powerpop scene providing that insatiable pop masked behind heavier beats. Welcome Home, the song that starts off the EP, uses a mix of rock instruments with a light dose of softer vocals. There isn’t anything awe inspiring about the singing, but I think the voice is fantastic the way it stays care-free and provides the perfect balance. In the end it is the simple style, fused with honest lyrics that give off a homely sound, which is inviting to say the least. I loved the track for its sincerity and how it really hits home without ever getting overly dramatic.
The EP for the most part follows this formula. Turn It Up, the second track, is by far my favourite song. It has a simple yet undeniably catchy chorus, but I was won over from the very start. The verses are made up of pleasant lyrics that only win you over after each line. Furthermore they are again honest and affectionate, and slowly bring out those summer time feelings. They do a great job of keeping things on a medium pace, and don’t get listeners too excited or dreadfully bored. The melodies are a testament to this, because they make use of the grungy guitars and the hard hitting drums, but I still only hear inspired and mellow beats. Super simple, super catchy and absolutely a fun and enduring song, it is the reason this band can make it big.
The EP finishes off in similar fashion, and I’m very glad I had the opportunity to hear it. For Brighter Brightest to be a Canadian band makes things that much more special. But their talent alone is on par with some of my favourites and they do somewhat resemble The Maine in their sincere style of play. I like the tracks because they have fun with them, but there is obvious meaning to each and every theme and chorus. The lyrics are nice, the vocals honest and the instrumentals are catchy, a true representative of the powerpop industry. I’m excited to see what the future holds for Brighter Brightest, because they are definitely ready to hang with the more popular bands.
