Canada’s Election Day Playlist

Canadas Election Day Playlist
Today’s another election, the 3rd straight time where we’ve had and early dissolution from minority governments. I like minority governments, everyone has different beliefs and it should be properly represented in a system where it’s still flawed and some votes aren’t represented (which was the reason for some people agreeing to trade ballots). I’m personally voting for the NDP this time around, while the Conservatives and Liberals screw themselves in the butts with their smear campaigns, it’s clear the NDP is right choice from a political stand point. From the fledgling economy (which Conservatives are supposed to be good at managing) to the Ad-Scandals, a few things have kept getting worse (including healthcare – a big one having put at home for a good 8 weeks).

Anyway here is the playlist before I rant anymore:
Minority by Green Day
Over Soon by Broadcast 2000 (only 37 days to campaign, and I missed a lot of the debates)
The Switch and The Spur by The Raconteurs (switching ballots is legal but how do they do it? seems odd when asking for ID’s etc).
Breaking It Up by Lykke Li (dissolutions are fun, but apparently costly)
Pioneers by Bloc Party (Look for the Bloc Part aka Bloc Quebecois to continue their stronghold)
Mr. Orange by Dengue Fever (for Jack Layton, hopefully the orange tide is as strong as ever)
Harper Road by Sun Kil Moon (for the Prime Minister)
Morning Heat Leader by Broadfield Marchers (yeah that’s all I got for Dion)
Hard Times by Run DMC (hard times are spreadin’ like the flu!)

Indie Playlist for UFC 83 St. Pierre vs Serra

Indie Playlist for UFC 83 St. Pierre vs SerraUFC 83 is happening this Saturday at the Bell Centre in Montreal. Canada’s first UFC event which I will be catching with some friends and I have to get this out of the way since I won’t be posting for a week (exams!).

I’m pretty excited and I hope MMA finally gets approved in the province of Ontario so we can get a event here in Toronto. Either way, I hope UFC comes back soon. I’ll be making picks in addition to having a tribute mp3 to the main card fighters.

Georges St. Pierre vs. Matt Serra

1. Midnight Surprise by Lightspeed Champion
-Can Matt Serra pull off the 2nd upset?
2. Frenchy’s By Holy Fuck
-Calling GSP Frenchy insulted him big time
3. Home Field Advantage by Drive-by Truckers
4. If I Faltered Slightly Twice by Of Montreal
-Georges is too good, everyone or almost everyone has St. Pierre taking this one easily. When the pressure is on GSP performs.

Winner: Georges St. Pierre in 5 round round war. I love Matt Serra as well to be honest and he has world class skill and will frustrate St. Pierre at times. It may be boring….

Michael Bisping vs. Charles McCarthy
5. Sing! Captain by The Handsome Furs
- For Charles “Captain Miserable” McCarthy
6.Everything is Average Nowadays by the Kaiser Chiefs
-For Michael Bisping getting mad that McCarthy called him average, such a huge insult.

Winner: Bisping by 2nd round TKO. Rooting for McCarthy though.

Rich Franklin vs Travis Lutter
7. Don’t Weigh Me Down by Broadcast 2000
- Lutter better make weight, he didn’t against Anderson Silva when he had a title shot on the line.
8. Can’t Lose by We Are Scientists
Franklin’s career can probably take only one more loss.

Winner: Travis Lutter by Armbar in Round 3. Picking an upset here.

A pretty weak card but I’m going to see this one anyway because it’s in Canada. The Montreal crowd should make this an event to watch (I envy their atmosphere).

Broadcast 2000: Building Blocks EP

Broadcast 2000: Building Blocks EPJoe Steer the multi-instrumentalist out of London, England and the artist behind Broadcast 2000 recently stumbled across our blog offering to let us check out his “Build Blocks” EP early which is due out on January 1. Upon listening to songs on his myspace, I knew I definitely had to get a copy of his EP.

Broadcast 2000 is entirely produced, composed (lyrically and musically) in Steer’s bedroom where he has a mix of the cello, doublebass, guitar, ukulele, glockenspiel, banjo, and makeshift percussions. He either plays with a backing band or may play with looping tracks (like Andrew Bird). He definitely is very talented and with currently 3000 myspace views you can tell he’s just starting out.

Both Kevin and I really dug his work. Kevin described it as soothing and relaxing (really surprising considering Kevin’s general tastes). I personally describe it as what I wish Beirut was, more simple rather then complex with less layers. Steer’s great vocals are really hypnotizing and I have to say it reminded me as a hybrid between Zach Condon and Jens Lekman.

Broadcast 2000 had their first official gig in November and hopefully he can come across the Atlantic and play in North America. This EP is definitely something you should think about getting your hands on. With both great lyrics, melodic voice and variety of sounds (I can’t tell which instrument is being played) it makes for a great EP and I definitely need to circle the day when a full release comes out.

Do yourself a favor and check out his myspace. Picture is the back cover of the EP done by VentedSpleen who did other art for Broadcast 2000 here.

Check out these tracks that has me going nuts about Broadcast 2000:
