Saturday Night Remix Dance Party: I heart music!

Sometimes words just can’t fully express the feelings that music brings with it. To be lost in a song to the point that all thoughts, issues, problems and pretty much the entire world around vanish and for those couple of minutes, you are able to experience something magical. If you’re like me, so encapsulated in the love of sound, you can’t listen to just anything that’s thrown at you. There needs to be that search involved with the discovery of something new… The excitement of listening to something and having it hit a spot deep within your heart. There also needs to be that emotion behind the song, (whether or not it’s the same emotion that was felt when the artist produced it) having it spark something inside that makes you feel truly alive.

Although put on a bit of a hiatus, the remix party is back! This time around we’re not focusing on any specific theme or artist, just a collection of 10 remixes of tracks that have found their way into that special place – the blend of emotionally charged feelings I find within myself. Maybe they’ll do the same for you.

Hermanos Inglesos-Komodo Single and Remixes Review

I have one song to review here, and three additional versions of the same song, as remixed by three additional artists. Although this review technically belongs to Hermanos Inglesos – a Belgian DJ duo consisting of brothers Didier & Cedric Engels – they’ve invited their own competition to the party. Let’s see how they compare.

The original track, Komodo, is fairly well constructed and mixed. The bass drum hits hard and deep, like a four-four-floor-filler should. The agogo bells are a nice sonic departure from the norm. The synth bass line growls along quite nicely among the drums, and the synth line and guitar lines and stabs stand out quite nicely. The song is not complicated, and everything sits well in the mix. Nicely done. Generally, my criteria for reviewing a DJ track would depend on the chops of a live set. With produced tracks, I have to depend on entertainment factor. I would rather have listened to this track in a live environment, as it lacks any real flair. I think that this track would definitely have benefited from the raw and ready construction during a live set.

Now let’s look at the remixes. Both the Toxic Avenger(Remix) and the Plastic Operator(Edit) tracks are subtle variations on the original track, as the words Remix and Edit may suggest. In comparison to the original, I feel that they are stronger and more interesting. Chances are, if you listen to, and enjoy, any one of the three of these tracks, you will enjoy the other two. When listening to remixes, I want to hear an artistic rendition of the original track, using enough familiar elements to constitute the title “Remix”. Sadly, neither of these two tracks afforded me that comfort. Which brings us to…

The Acidkids remix comes out as much more interesting and less “Electronica 101″ than the original track, providing much more energy for club-goers. Best of all, Acidkids shaved a minute off of a five-and-a- half minute tune. This is definitely the standout track of the four. Definitely worth a listen, as it is far more engaging.

You can check out the Hermanos Inglesos website for a bio and some articles that are in such a hard to read font that you’re on your own to interpret. There’s also a picture on the website for your viewing pleasure. If you click on the “How Do You Feel?” link, there are fourteen tunes that you can listen to. It’s a shame that Komodo was the only tune submitted for review, as I found much more interesting listening on the band’s website. For additional listening, head to the band’s Myspace page. Oddly enough, the Acidkids remix on the Myspace page has the fewest plays, although I feel it is the strongest Komodo mix.

Was it worth Hermanos Inglesos inviting the others to the party? It was for me, because it turned me on to the Acidkids.

AWmusic’s Overrated Acts of 2008

I use the word “overrated” in a different light. I personally see if it as a positive thing for a band or artist to be labeled with the word overrated. In my opinion it’s better to be “overrated” then “underrated”, sure it’s nice to say someone say your talents are better hen people are recognize but whoopde-fucking-do, as much as I’d like to say my opinion means something in by no ways do I expect to affect the masses. Some artists are overrated due to increasing popularity and credible (or more credible) critics liking an artist’s work.

Here is my overrated of 2008 list. I tried to be objective and included artists I like as artists you like can be overrated too.
#5 Vampire Weekend
Why are they so successful?
Early on when they passed around their Blue CD-R (I’ve got a copy), the production values were not of a band that was self-releasing their stuff –as it was a great album from an unknown band. They became blogger darlings for almost a full year while releasing EPs and mercifully releasing their self titled disc with just two new tracks. Pitchfork gave them an 8.8, played on SNL and had their popularity EXPLODE.
What makes them overrated?
They are really just a pop rock band. Granted a pretty good one, they just aren’t going to wow everyone with their brand of pop.
What are their chances of proving their worth?
75%. I think they proved with “Ottoman”, the Fleetwood Mac and Radiohead cover that they can achieve greatness beyond what they showed on their self titled release. I’m really high on Vampire Weekend and they personally haven’t really given any reason to doubt it. However, they do need to bigger and better things to have those naysayers silenced.

#4 Fleet Foxes
Why are they so successful?
The Fleet Foxes had the best year in terms of critics praising their band. They had Pitchfork’s #1 album of the year and that website is huge…
What makes them overrated?
The album is good don’t get me wrong, but best band and album of 2008? It’s arguable but I think there’s just a bit too much hype. They’re all great singers but they didn’t amaze me or change my life like “Midnight Organ Fight” or “Random Spirit Lover”. There are definitely better choices for album of the year.
What are their chance of proving their worth?
I’d say 70%. They have big shoes to fill on whatever they release. There are countless examples of the “one album wonder” and the pedestal that the Foxes have been placed on make it unlikely their next album will come close.

#3 Lindstrom
Why is he so successful?
Critics love his album Wherever You Go I go Too. I don’t (I tried an experimental review HAH, betcha it wasn’t that good ). It is different and experimental which has critics getting their pants wet. Containing just 3 tracks on an hour long record, one song clocks in at close to a half hour..
What makes him so overrated?
Think about, 3 songs, one song is 30 minutes long the other two are 15 minutes long. I’m all for long songs that are really good and make you feel like it’s just 4 minutes but this 30 minute track made me feel like it’s really 2 and a half hours. I was urged to press the skip button but I realized that it did me no good. The music itself isn’t great, lots of looped sections, duplicates and ultimately it doesn’t end anywhere. I understand it’s different but it still doesn’t make it any good.
What are his chances proving his worth?
Incomplete. He may satisfy critics again but it’ll take some actual innovative music (e.g. not just slapping on a 30 minute track and multiple repeats that has more pretentiousness then most albums (who honestly believes they can pull off a 30 minute track?)

#2 MGMT
Why are they so successful?
They have had an ability to stay relevant even after lukewarm reviews from critics. Some great marketing, some pretty good remixes and some great singles propelled them to internet Superstardom.
What makes them overrated?
While the psychedelic label is thrown on them quite a bit, they are merely dressed up pop with some simple but effective keyboard arrangements. They are hardly a band to change the landscape of music. While some songs are enjoyable, they really had an half of an album. The first album contained those popular singles, the second half kind of sucked though did show some promise. They haven’t released that much material to stay relevant, they just had other artists remix their work.
What are their chances of proving their worth?
50%. I think it can go either way. The masses ditch the popular as fast as they get into them and MGMT could very well go the way of the Killers and suck from here on out.

#1 Girl Talk
Why is he so successful?
Good reviews and Feed The Animals took a lot of songs that was brilliantly mixed. It’s also using popular music, creating the perfect party mix for both casual fans and hardcore fans of music (I really like the album).
Why makes him overrated?
Over glorified DJ. Other then mixing, which a DJ can do, he’s really just taking 30 second samples and songs and putting it together (no other DJ likely has actually put this on record since it’s potentially illegal). In the big scale of things, he’s not really doing much. He also likes really shitty music. He mixes the music well but I’d rather drop dead then listen to some of the music he uses.
What are his chances of proving his worth?
10%. Girl Talk can’t do the same exact thing that he’s done in his past two albums. He’s ultimately reached the peak of popularity and will have to create rather then mix. It’s likely that he will have a lot of trouble whatever he does which is why the odds are so stacked against him.

Constantines and Feist – Islands in The Stream Cover

I was visiting The Constantines myspace recently because I know they’re from Toronto but I’ve never listened to them before. The first track they had was a track recorded with Feist covering “Islands In The Stream” a song by Kenny Rogers sung with Dolly Parton.

I’m totally in love with this cover…granted I’ve never heard the first version. I usually dig duets vastly especially of the male/female variety. It’s an awesome love song and it made me realize that Mya sings this part in Pras’ Ghetto Superstar (I didn’t even need wikipedia for it!).

Anyway, I don’t normally like posting singles especially if its like “Violet Hill” or CSS’ new single unless I’ve got a great excuse. I don’t want to be a lame duck blogger either because everyone else is doing it. Not too many bloggers have discussed this track.

Just enjoy a great single, not original but it’s fucking lovely.

Allan’s Top Songs of 07 #50-26

I actually quite enjoyed picking out the top songs of 2007. There were many tracks from albums I loved and other singles that stood out in a lackluster album. Most of these tracks I have posted before (I’ll link to the post if you wish to dig hard enough to download them) and are mainly bands I am familiar with. Generally, I blogged about the band if they appeared in the top 50. There are some tracks I haven’t posted yet so you’ll be able to download them here (I think it looks bad if I have every mp3 listed available for download). Mixtape For the Holidays (Without Being Christmas-y)

The term Christmas doesn’t really suit this blog well. None of us are Christian (I think) and whether it is Athiest, Christianity, Judaism, Agnostic, Buddhism, (or even Satanism?). Either way everyone is basically off from school or work or whatever daily happenings of their life. So it’s great to have some get togethers and overall it’s supposed to be a fun rocking time.

I am not going with the generic Christmas songs but I think going with happier type songs. I do have a favorite Christmas song (by The Raveonettes). Anyway I found this list hard to do…who knows maybe it’s the selection I have on this blog or just that most songs are depressing or angry and have nothing to do with being cheerfully happy? Enough ranting.

Allan’s Top Albums of ‘07 :#20-#11

Exams are upcoming and I am going to have to delay regular posting until December 17th! So hopefully the blog can stay afloat with traffic and hopefully the other guys pick up the slack with posts. Anyway my selection on my top albums of this year go with what I would term as “my style” so if you look back it won’t be based on the original score I gave at the time (some albums have that lasting effect after a few months). Anyway check out the bottom half of my top 20 of 2007 feel free to criticize!

#20 Feist – The Reminder
Original Rating: 5/5
This album was on rotation for about two weeks then I just totally forgot about it. I personally didn’t like “The Reminder” as much as her previous effort “Let It Die”. Feist has seen some mainstream success with that iPod commercial but I still love her.

#19 BSS Presents Kevin Drew – Spirit If…
Original Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
Was this effort a little bit like Broken Social Scene and didn’t really distinguish Kevin Drew as a solo artist? Sure but who cares?! Still a great album and if it’s being compared to BSS you know it’s good. This album usually doesn’t come to mind when thinking of the top albums of 2007 but after going back to it…I have to agree with myself…lol

#18. Justice – Cross (too lazy to find the cross image)
Original Score: 4.75 out of 5
This album just makes me want to dance. Annoying at times but overall something different than what I would normally listen to. I almost didn’t even bother to try to check out Justice but I’m glad I gave it a chance.

#17 Simian Mobile Disco – Attack Decay Sustain Release
Original Score: Forgot (Should be 4.75 out of 5)
Simian Mobile Disco are basically tied in my book when it comes to the score. The tie-breaker may be that I like SMD a little more as it suits what I look in a electronic bands. To think this liking to SMD started with that Hustler video with girls making out. This album makes me want to dance or go on drugs. Either way I feel like I’d be having a good time putting on this record.

#16 Spoon – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Original Score: 4.5 out of 5
To be perfectly honest I barely gave this album ANY time before and after reviewing it. One thing for sure though, it didn’t need any effort to begin liking. It probably doesn’t get any higher on this list for being rather simple and I’d agree that artistically it probably doesn’t have the same quality as those ahead of it. To me anyway this album has one of the better first halves of an album then any other album of 2007. The second half was decent but it’s hard to match up to Don’t Make Me A Target, You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb and Rhthm and Soul.

#15 The National – Boxer
Original Score: 4 out of 5
It felt like forever when I originally tried to listen to “Boxer” and had such a tough time and I finally reviewed it after struggling with it for a few months. “Boxer” is definitely a grower and you will have to give a LOT of time I would say before it creeps up on you and reels you in. If you asked me when I did the review the only two songs I liked were “Mistaken For Strangers” and “Start A War” you can probably add most of the album now. If it was the perfect album it wouldn’t be called a “grower” and it takes my 15 spot.

#14 Josh Ritter – Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter
Original Rating: 4.25 out of 5
This album was easy to like from the beginning. I seem to have an affinity for folk songs that I never knew I had and despite I find this album rather “simplistic” compared to the other albums on here, it’s overall just great music and something that had more playing time then The National and Spoon and thus the higher ranking.

#13 Arctic Monkeys -Favourite Worst Nightmare
Original Rating: 4.5 out of 5
This is another one that I barely recall giving a lot of effort in listening and critiquing (you could probably tell with the sub-par review). I go back to this album once in awhile but I find myself intrigued more by their previous effort “Whatever People Say I am…”. Very solid everywhere and produced one of my favorite songs of the year “Fluorescent Adolescent”.

#12 Moonbabies – Moonbabies At the Ballroom
Original Rating: 5 out of 5
I remember listening to this album for a good month straight earlier this year. I sure do love “dream pop”. The Moonbabies probably won’t be on many other lists this year but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check out their album. I just haven’t seen a ton of exposure but from top to bottom this album had me singing along. I actually haven’t seen one entirely bad review for this album…but who knows why? If you have similar tastes as I do then you will like this album.

#11 The Shins – Wincing The Night Away

The Shins were already one of my favorite bands before they released Wincing The Night Away. I was a fan of indie rock but I didn’t pursue it like I do now. I’m scared to read my review in March because it is so long ago and I arguably was not the same blogger as I am now. Anyway is this album as good as their previous works? No but this album is solid top to bottom and I’m not complaining. This album I believe really appeases already Shins fans without going “too” mainstream and they have become a very popular band now. I’m having trouble picking a song right now that would be called my favorite…too many to choose from. I feel kind of “iffy” putting this just outside my top 10 (it was originally but Okkervil River booted them out).

Feist: The Reminder Review

The Reminder came out in stores last week and I actually bought it on time in a store. I am pleased that I did. I really didn’t know what to expect but I had high expectations after loving Let It Die.
On The Reminder it’s less jazzy and has songs that are more poppy like My Moon, My Man or I Feel It All or 1234. This album gave me less of a depressing feeling like the songs Let It Die or Lonely Lonely and more of a Mushaboom feeling throughout the entire album. This album I’ve played constantly for a week. The music and lyrics are great and she’s such a great singer as always so there is no change. There is still some of the jazzy, mellow sounds that she had previous with songs such The Water. This album would have me singing along, I would love to go to her concert but that’s looking in doubt with the lack of a friend to go with.

I am not disappointed at all, what else would you have me say to praise this album? It’s fucking awesome and she’s fucking sexy. I can’t help but to swear. I give it a 5 out of 5. I’ll leave you guys with one upload and 2 of her YouTube videos.

Feist coming to Toronto @ Massey Hall on May 26th

I feel like talking about music today and apparently this is called my world so that’s what I’m going to do.

Feist is playing in Toronto and other various Canadian dates and on Saturday May 26th she’s coming over. Tickets go on sale this Saturday at 12. Now I don’t have any at this moment to go with but fuck it and I’ll force someone to go with me as a favour. Additionally, I am hoping things don’t sell out like they did with the Arcade Fire though I should be prepared for anything now.

I really want to see Feist and I have no idea what other concerts are out there but I really want my summer full of music concerts as I am still a concert virgin!

Anyway since this post is about Feist, here are some things by Feist if either you’ve never heard of her or haven’t listened to some of her stuff, it’s recommended!

One of the songs I can’t stop playing non-stop is Postal Service Remix of Mushaboom which features some of the vocal recording of Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie/Postal Service.

The lyrics for where the white boy dance by the Killers: this is a bonus track on the album but if they had these lyrics it would be down right funny having white guys singin it:
