Kings Of Leon – Only by Night

Kings Of Leon Only by Night
Kings Of Leon are of one of the most hated bands by Pitchfork. If you don’t agree just look at their scores and Pitchfork just manages to keep including reviews of the band despite their clear dislike.

Anyway, I got Only by Night in the mail even though I never asked for it. It would be a huge waste to chuck it in the recycling bin. Besides I was actually curious since I never listened to a Kings of Leon track previously.

I’ve heard all the annoying hype on Sex On Fire, I tend to stay away from all things popular, especially with blogs because it just feels ingenuine on what’s good.

I was kind of surprised at what I was hearing when I popped in the disc, it’s not the Southern Rock I was expecting that many people compare Kings of Leon to inspire. While Sex On Fire implies exactly what you think it does, it’s not exactly a fiery song (unless sex with stds is what they mean).

The Kings of Leon aren’t bad by any means from this album but it definitely lacks an oomph, or a spice that say indie band The Weeks does. Heck, even the variability. I definitely expect more out of mainstream artists because if you’re popular you better be good or just defies logic. The problem with the Kings of Leon, nothing stands out. Everything they do just seems, rather boring even if it’s not bad. Just mediocre. They don’t have great singing by any means and if I read the lyrics, I’d probably hate them.

Musically a lot of the songs just sound the same even though I know they’re different. It might be the tone, the tone just stays the same throughout. There’s no momentum and ultimately it’s just an album I forget I’m listening to. It’s passable I guess but in no way anything great. Their popularity does puzzle me in this case.
